The sad saga of the stinkin' Lincoln

I have good spidey sense when it comes to working on cars, typically. This is exhibit A. Owners relative whose father in law passed and left it to him. Had some leaks, and I was coming in to work extra after July 4th (optional for us, but no pay). The owner asked us to finish the Lincoln up during that time. I commented to my shop foreman that I really didn't want to spend my "off day" working on a Lincoln. He offered to do it, and I ripped his arm off. Because, spidey sense goes off on 22 year old Ford products.
First the power steering hoses. Then the secondary air injection valve broke off. My shop foreman, not having a spidey sense that I do, decided to replace some suspect heater hoses, thermostat and thermostat housing. One of the hoses developed a pinhole leak the first test drive. Then the radiator started crumbling, so got a new one. No it's all back together and running hot...2 months later...
Dodged one, I did...

This is the 1st time I've seen aftermarket electronics cause a parasitic draw. Well...I mean, 1st time TODAY.

Getting ready to pull wire next week . This is a diesel power tensioner to hold wire back while being pulled , the puller is on the other end it is very large. Each reel of conductor wire weighs 14000 lbs. We will change reels as they empty , each pull is 2 . 3 miles long it will take six reels. It's going to be fun in the triple digits next week. Enjoy your A.C we'll make sure it runs.

there are six wire trailers loaded and ready to go. It will take about and hour each time to put the wire together and swap trailers.

Out of curiosity, I see what looks like...for lack of a better term, a tennis racket shaped wire guide/caddy that appears to make the line do a simple 360 loop. These are in between polls and pretty common. Just curious what it is? May not even be power lines.

Communications, ATT, Comcast... typically, lower wires on a pole are low volt, midway up are secondaries, the ones at the top are primaries which are the high voltage ones.

I think what you are asking is the machine has hydraulic brakes it's pumps are controlled by a person sitting in it . It keeps the wire from going down to the ground while it is being pulled through rollers we call blocks. The wire is threaded around the bull wheels and pressure will be set at 2000 lbs initially and adjusted as needed.the wire is very tight around them it won't slip . It will feed of a few feet and then be put in tension mode it will take a minimum of 2000lds of pull to make it turn. The wire weighs almost 2 lbs per foot . You can imagine what it takes to keep it in the Air will being pulled. The machines and wire reels are much larger than the toys the use on side of the road. It will be a 115 kv line when done

Well living the retired life after ankle gave out . Spent my youth doing excavation work with my dad till I finished electronics school in 79. Went to work as a technician at a cable company for 10 years till I was able to score a job with a fire dept . As with all fire fighters I took on a second job doing computer recycling and reutilization all th round the 90’s and early 2000 till the economy crashed . Retired from fire fighting/ paramedic 2015 with a bad ankle . So I spend my days trying to get all my projects finished !

Spent 32+yrs with LSP Troop L, and retired as Shift Lt. 15 yrs ago. After a couple of yrs of retirement, I started working 8-12 weeks per year on Turnarounds, operating a tractor hauling exchangers in the refineries to make my 'play money'. About 4 yrs ago I also started doing a little work with compact track loader/brush cutter when convenient. At this time the TL250/Vail brushcutter business is picked up enough I really don't care to go back on the Turnarounds ...... lol.

We had the old red/white units when I started in '71, with the old light blue/dark blue uniforms like this ......


then the white units ......


then dark blue units with dark blue uniforms .....


Then back to white units ....


Now they have these .......



Just for laughs .....

On the Turnarounds normally I operated one of these small 70HP JD, on this one in Texas City, I ran the 225HP JD with cab. That was great since most days it was cold, windy, and raining!


Now, most of my 'play money' comes from this Takeuchi TL250, with either Vail brushcutter, grapple rake, or bucket.

we are pulling wire this week. It's hot as crap down here

we just changed reels here's how we put it together to continue pulling . Later it will be sleeved and put together with a 60 ton press.
