So..... I took the car to a local MX track this morning to run some easy practice laps to see if I can drive with 1.5 hands and I killed it. 😟

Apparently the air filter collapsed and got sucked down into the velocity stack. Once that happened it sucked the filter oil out in those two spots and started inhaling dust. I didn't notice a problem until it was honed at least .030 or .040 over so now I get to pull the motor, disassemble it and get the block sleeved on top of having to rebuild it.

W.T.F I should have just stayed in bed this morning.....

Is this the first run with that air filter setup?

Assuming the lack of a cage is what did it in?

I've been running that filter setup for almost 2 seasons with no issues. Lack of a cage was definitely the cause. Weird that it was never an issue before though. I'll have to build one out of tig wire and epoxy it onto the top of the velocity stack before I use it again.

I'm not sure how much of this thread you have gone back and read since you have been back but I finally got the ABS unit out of the car and the computer happy with it not being there and no more front diff clutch either. Car is now full time 4wd and stupid light weight with all that crap gone.

The dirt was mint this morning. I was the first one there and got to go out on a freshly groomed track and run laps all by myself for the first hour. I couldn't go full tilt with my hand still in a cast but I was definitely getting it for driving 1.5 handed.

Put it in the book and move on I suppose? When are you thinking you'll be racing again?

Maybe 6 weeks if im extremely lucky. The pistons I'm going to use are still two weeks out and the sleeve guy can't finish hone or deck the block (if needed) until I get those in my hands. Hopefully the dirt that got in didn't wipe out the crank, rods or head because if I have to replace those it's going to be much much longer than 6 weeks. Until I get it out and disassembled I won't know how bad it is but with my luck lately its probably bad...

Engine is out but I've had Dr appointments the last few days so I haven't pulled it apart yet. I'm going to do that today after I mow the lawn and get the trailer set up as my clean room for disassembly.

Lots of dirt in the intake ports and lots of oil in the exhaust ports but I'm happy to say that the cam journals in the head look fine and with a good cleaning after it's disassembled will be as good as new. That is a huge relief as I REALLY didn't want to start over with a new head! 🤗

I also ordered a pair of 2019 Honda Africa Twin throttle body boots to experiment with. If it moves the TB up and vertical enough it should give me enough room to put an air box around the intake along with a real air filter. 😁

There are a few dings in one of the combustion chambers from back when it ate porcelain from a defective spark plug but that's old news and other than that the head is in excellent shape.

The cylinders didn't fare so well. These b****es look like they are about .090 over with how much of the top ring I can see..... 🤣

I'll get the bottom end pulled apart tomorrow and hopefully be able to box up and ship the block out Friday morning so it can get sleeved and honed for the new pistons.

that’s great news !!!!!!

u get time to look at crank/rod bearings ?

My hunch would be the dirt got trapped hopefully in filter

How big a ring end gap u end up with -?

I was slacking yesterday so I'm working on pulling the bottom end apart now and will know about the rod/crank bearings here shortly.

All the big particles look like they fell straight into the oil pan and went through the filter before entering the oiling system so I'm confident the crank is good. Even if the oil pump gears/rotors look OK when I get those sections torn down I'm going to replace them just for peace of mind. I can barely afford this disaster nevermind a second one! Lol

I'd say it has ALL the ring gap now. Cylinders are so worn that I don't thing there is even any squeeze left on the rings. 😆

On another positive note..... My engine guy found me a set of Crower rods with ARP 625+ bolts for a steal on FB Marketplace the other day so I scooped them up and they will be here tomorrow. I wasn't planning on getting new rods unless mine were trashed but for the price I paid it was a no brainer.

your "engine guy - POIDH" must be real happy - getting nice new strong rods and minimal boring work for the liners - might be close to size already - lol.......

im with ya - just got done a basket case I bought - guy told me it "ran" a couple of days ago but couldn't get it started now - I knew what I was getting - no water in radiators, head gasket was missing, ring was stuck in piston groove, no carbon on top of piston, could us a tape measure for the ring end gap, found liner past last bore - how it even made 50psi compression was beyond me - all fixed up now.

Got most of the engine apart last night. All that's left for tonight is to pull the pan to remove the rods/pistons and then I can split the block and pull the remaining parts out....
