My father and uncles and cousins always told me that no one wanted to kill people that were essentially in the same situation as themselves. And, when they did, they knew someone had lost a son, a father, a brother, etc. Many, like my uncle's in the Air Force met other German pilots, after the war, found out they had fought in direct contact with them.
And, they said the men who started wars had no sons, daughters or families at risk.
They admired Gen George Patton as he was
considered a millionaire, as he was born into a wealthy California family and further increased his wealth by marrying Beatrice Ayer, the daughter of a very successful Boston industrialist, making him part of a very affluent social circle. But, he was with his men in dire battle situations.
