Yep. It's the straight cut gears in the sub-trans. No remedy that I know of. Can't use gear oil. It won't shift drive modes properly, if at all.

I just switched to 0-40 mobile 1 full synthetic. It's made for European air cooled cars. So far it's the heaviest oil I've found that will allow the sub trans to shift when cold. We rode about 250 miles last week and had no issues with shifting to low gear like I had with the 10-40 when cold.

Been running this for about 100 miles. Shift better then it did with 10-30. Plus it’s a lot quieter then it was. It’s got the Viscosity of ATF with the protection in 75-90 gear oil.

Is it a new noise?
How many miles?
Did you check the oil level?
Have you done service recently?

You get some grinding when it was cold? Mine did that a couple times over the last couple years and it gave up the ghost out of the blue on the last ride I was on. Check your cable (under the main battery and little splash cover), hopefully it's just a tad stretched and getting it back in spec coupled with the synthetic prevents it from going kaboom.

Its usually been my lack of patience when it grinds but I'll check it when I pull the buggy apart this week to get ready for the takeover.

1,000 miles, noise not knew just seems louder. Doing service now and asking what’s best oil to put in other than Honda G4.

I use 10w-40 in all my stuff. Whatever is cheapest at Walmart.

have you checked the fluid in the sub transmission? I changed all 3 drain plugs last time and it made my shifts and driving noise quieter.

The gear whine in all 3 Talons I’ve spent time in has been bad enough that I won’t ride without earplugs (inside my helmet). Hearing loss is permanent and progressive - since it doesn’t hurt we ignore it until it‘s too late - tinnitus 24/7 for me.
