That flag mount was in use but now that I had to slide the spare carrier down I cant use it anymore. I ordered a 2" vertical flag mount so I can use a flag on the other side. Now I don't have to remove the flag when I want to get in the trunk.

It's a bit of a struggle for me to swing the rack up to get into the trunk, but I can do it solo. It is heavy and I'm not sure I'd be able to do it if I didn't relocate the RotoPax mount to the bed extender. The spare weighs over 50 pounds and the 2 gallon RotoPax is 18 pounds full.

My crude kickstand held in place.

I cut down an old broomstick to hold the tire in place when I'm solo. Not the best solution but it will have to do for now.

I'm seriously considering the Dirt Road Fabrication bed extender with spare tire mount option to replace my JEI spare carrier. Dirt Road Fab has mentioned that the Dragon Fire hitch receiver will work with his bed extender/spare mount but there it a fitment issue with his set up on the 2 seater Talons. Once he has that worked out I'm likely going that route, it's a much better solution for me to be able to access my trunk.

Here's the Dirt Road Fab extender (photo credit to Dirt Road Fab)

Thanks for the pics and info. I ordered the JEI so once it arrives I’ll mod a little and see if I can get a gas shock to work and post pics. Thanks

fwiw: Lil'_Steve invited me to the SxS rally at Sand Hollow in November. While there he showed me that he had to clearance the pins on the JEI or they were very tight and needed 'encouragement' to remove. Adjusting the clamps on the roll cage didn't solve the problem.

Yes, I had to elongate the pin hole on one clamp since no amount of clamp adjustment resulted in easy pin removal. Not sure if this is a common problem or mine was tweaked somehow. I bought my Talon slightly used and it came with the JEI spare carrier already installed.

Back to the drawing board. I just installed Rokblokz mud flaps so my broomstick no longer works as a kick stand. The gas strut idea is worth looking into.

You could always take a pole or anything that’s long enough, put a bolt or pin through it that fits in the ratcheting holes of the high lift jack, and the other end would support the tire when it’s upright.

I have a few good ideas on the gas strut but will have to wait till my spare tire mount shows up to try them out.

A 4' (?) piece of rope from the high lift side of the roll bar to the spare would keep it from slamming down on the right side. Once it starts to fall, I wouldn't be able to stop it. Tied high on the roll bar would put it out of the way for trunk access.

I could probably get away with a tie down or ratchet strap for now until I come up with something better. I can't help but think I'd be better off with the DRF extender/spare carrier.

Since I'll need both a spare carrier and bed extender/tailgate, the DRF unit is most likely where I'll end up. But from a mechanical leverage perspective, and knowing how yer krazie a$$ drives, the JEI carries the spare 'better' IMO, not hanging off the back. Much like I mentioned how your Rotopax might work the metal mount into fatigue. It's ok if you call me OCD. :p

Yeah, I thought about that, I'll run it by the Shock Therapy guys in a couple of weeks to see what they think about the weight so far back there.

I don't disagree with you on the potential metal fatigue, but I'm not too concerned with it and it some fatigue does show up it can easily be dealt with.

Gonna call you Sid. ;)

Ok I finally got my JEI spare tire carrier and was able to work on it today and install a gas strut to aid in lifting and closing of the spare tire carrier. Took a couple hours of measuring and installation but I’m glad to say it works awesome!

I also have a video of it but looks like I’m not able to post videos on here.

How does the RotoPax mount? To the wheel with an adapter plate, or through the wheel to the center bolt on the Carrier? A pic would be great!
Thanks

It mounts through the wheel, the mount is bolted to the carrier.

I Later moved the RotoPax mount to my bed extender for easier access and to take some weight off the spare carrier when accessing my trunk.

It's a jei.. but had to chop it up and make what I need for my application.
Is there not a spare rack out there that mounts the tire horizontally as yours now is?
