Ok, so what is the compressed version? I've read this thread but still don't understand what to pick up. Looks like UHF, but then it would need to be programmed. What frequencies are being used? Or is it FR or CB?
seems like most are ending up with the TYT TH8600WP the WP is water proof, a good source to buy just one that I know of is R&L electronics in Hamilton Ohio, to be warned this is a Ham Radio so transmitting on ham bands without a ham license is illegal but this Radio will transmit off band on the FRS frequencies which evidently most are using, someone on here will have more detailed info on that I am shure, You will need a antenna I got a small 1/4 wave dual band antenna for mine, these are the FRS frequencies, I was able to manually program these into radio fairly easy,,,,

Update on this antenna, @Ragnar406 You where right that antenna is junk Me and my Brother worked all morning trying to get a good SWR We tried everything, We did narrow it down to the Antenna because we had some other dual band 1/4 wave and 1/2 wave antennas in the shop hooked them up to same mount and had good readings,,,, Don't Buy That one,,,,,, ThanksView attachment 172839
Sorry to hear you had the same experience .. I had a lot of hope for it and was hoping yours would tune as I would try another one.

I actually took that antenna back to R&L and He tested it and could not get it below 1.5 He was getting same reading I was then He pulled another one off the shelf and it was the same He said wow that Sucks LOL, I ended up getting a small 1/4 wave dual band, Jet stream, it checked out pretty good,,,, :)

I agree on the TYT-TH8600, it is dual band which means you have VHF and UHF
This is the model my group uses.
You can program any channel from either band including the handheld GMRS or FRS radios where as the Rugged product is one or the other not dual band.

The TH8600 is 25 watt which will get you 12-15 miles of talk range.
The Rugged 60 watt will get you 20-30+ miles. This unit is a package deal with antenna but it's 1/4 wave, I would tell you to get a 30" 1/2 wave but you can deal with that later if you need or want farther range. This is the only model that is water proof if it matters.

TYT TH8600WPJTM2P

You can also order from Amazon a dual band 50-watt unit such as QYT KT980 plus which is the unit I use, it's 75 watt and will get you a little further in transmit range (30 miles).
You will also have to order an antenna, coax and mount with this option.

https://www.amazon.com/136-174mhz-4...by-Programming/dp/B07H2T1W8J/?tag=sxsweb24-20

Yes you have to program them if you don't order from Rugged. It's not that hard to do though if you're tech savvy at all. You will also have to order an antenna, coax and mount with this option.

1:1.5 would be ok - is that what it was reading? or was it 1:5 ? yea that would be bad

Small antennas is not good in the radio world, long antennas is not good in the SXS world lol.
But then again how far do you want or need to talk :D
If you want good performance and distance get a decent 27" to 36" model like a Luiton which is a very good band/performer:

https://www.amazon.com/Antenna-Base-load-Magnetic-Baofeng-TALKCOOP/dp/B01MQT044S/?tag=sxsweb24-20

agree on the antenna size but at least for me most of the use will be communicating with the People around Me in a Group, My mount is a PL259 I thought that maybe I would buy a larger 1/2 wave nicer antenna that maybe I could break down and keep in my storage box and if I needed to get out just switch antenna and use it parked,,,,

Yes I bet your ride mostly desert - an antenna that long would not last long in the trails over here. I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IDTJ2KE/?tag=sxsweb24-20 mounted upside down in the back and it has worked great - even protected I have still lost a couple and carry a spare

with 2 meter and 70 cm these type radios it is not always as much the power output as it is line of sight and antenna,,,,

It seems to nee if you are just taking locally with the ride leader out friend in the ride a family radio could work for a short range
It will work but we have had people in our groups using them that could hear other radios but could only be heard by the sxs closest to them obviously results vary depending on terrain.

Nothing wrong with your antenna choice, like all of us different taste or needs, their really isn't a right or wrong answer/solution.
Just pointing out the difference in terms of performance.
If you just need to talk to the friends in your ride...anything works including handhelds, which some models actually perform quite well.

LOL, we have the same issue's; the desert has a lot of mesquite trees to snag look at DG Riders pictures...when we ride in the mountains it's thick forest.

@Tramguage1 was talking about buying a few radios, programming them and bringing them to the TO. I requested a couple if he does that, you might want to send him a PM.

I have at least one other member taking me up on the radios. They will be the GT-3 type handhelds with the frequencies already programmed. These will be plenty good for inter-group communication. I personally put one in my grandsons machine when we ride. Its great to be able to warn or coach him through an obstacle from my machine.

Many on here have the file.
I hope I'm not asking a stupid question, but will a CB radio not work for communication between riders?

This is grand! What would we also need? I'd like to put in an order. I'll PM you.

The problem with a CB is that hardly anyone is going to have one on these rides from what I gather, It's a matter of having a radio setup that most everyone is using, a CB would more than likely work fine if everyone had one but a CB operates on a different band,,,, probably the simplest solution for anyone who don't want to spend the time to install or money on the mobile rig would just be to use a hand held they work very well for group communication Your just not going to get out more than maybe a mile or two at best, the other plus is that they are very cheap,,,,,
