Someone had to jump in and me being all otter like...
A little further up the road and on the offshoot road ran 2 miles before that ended at this old steam donkey and mine site.There is evidence of mining all over these valleys. You can see piles of tailings left over from early prospectors.
In the Animas river at Animas forks there is an old prospector shovel I uncovered but then I alerted the national forest people to its existence so they could remove it properly and put it in a museum or somewhere. It was perfectly preserved because of all the high mineralization in the river.

Don’t forget to bring your binoculars. There are lots of wildlife around the area and having a good set of binoculars to see them that much more Helpful from a distance.

Going up and over engineer Pass is tantamount to words that breach on stupendous fascinating exhilarating magnificent and so on. Absolutely breathtaking!!!

Something else, everywhere they have a sign posted with an elevation recorded, my GPS shows something entirely different and when I asked @Alan and his son both of them came up with an entirely different number as well but all within typically around 20 or so feet.

I have moved over to Highlander RV Park site number 20. Today we rode to the ghost town of Carson and a little bit up and over the pass there and checked out some interesting scenery.

Carson is up a moderately difficult trail/road number 36 Wager Gulch rd off the Alpine loop.
This is off the southern part of the loop about 8-10 miles from beginning of the loop. The trail itself is about 7 miles each way to Carson.

Today found us at nearly 13,000’ in elevation.
I tell you man, these Coloradans are some good people . They done fed me and showed me around and been all nice. Definitely gonna have to make my way back. There’s so much more to see and do in this area. I’m very excited about a return trip in the near future.

@Alan and crew left this morning so I decided to go and get lost off the Alpine loop. The 1st diversion off the loop was up Nellie Creek. The trail guide rates it as an easy trail but it did have some wide and deep creek crossings as well as some tight switchbacks. The trail was also fairly rough and rocky. Within the 1st mile is a nice waterfall After that is more evidence of mining and the views are really nice. The trail ends at s parking lot hiking trailhead called Umcompaghre Peak. Needless to say I decided not to hike it as I figured I had a long day ahead of me. Even though it was only a 3 1/2 mile hike to the top.
This trail had some seriously fantastic scenery to boot and was well worth the 1.5 hour diversion.
Compared to all the other roads around here, I’d definitely say this was more a drivable trail.

After Nelly Creek I decided I was going to go check out something different and I couldn’t really find it on the map but I didn’t see a sign that said called Golconda mining district or some such. I did see a road said 20 and either on another one it said 21 and took it upon a whim to follow them and I’m glad I did because I was wrong warded with absolutely spectacular stunning scenery and got really high up I think it was something like 12,630 feet at that point and there is an old boarding house there as well as a what somebody called compressor shack but it was strange because once I open the door I was rewarded by a giant hit and miss engine from the late 1800’s. I often wonder how they got this giant machines into such high altitude back country and maneuvered into a workable position to be useful to the mine. Just above the boarding house you could drive up a narrow extremely rocky and unstable road up to a melting glacier. That was really cool.

I saw a huge freaking eagle today too!!!
I don’t know if any these pictures will have captured him but it was grand and beautiful and sit right behind this ancient stone the wall corner old building that is no longer there. That was really cool. Out of nowhere comes a Dodge minivan with a family of four very fat people. I was surprised to see these people driving a 2 Wheel Dr. vehicle up around the loop. Crazy crazy tourists don’t have a clue. I saw them they were coming down the backside Of Cinnamon Pass. Balls of steel or completely stupid. I’m happy for them if they made it but boy! You can definitely see the eagle in the third picture better. I’m glad I have my binoculars at least.
