I came very close to that happening to me. These prairie rattlers look nearly identical to the local "blow snake" or "bull snake" that are extremely common in this area. I have caught those snakes my whole life - I just put on a leather glove and grab them. They bite you but it doesn't hurt much through the glove. The only thing that threw me off was the unique stripe over the eyes. Glad I noticed it! I nearly reached back and grabbed it.

Unfortunately this was in city limits, so busting him with my AR-15 would have raised a few eyebrows in the neighborhood and got me in trouble with the popos.

I better make sure I don't misrepresent my hometown. We here in Taylor/Snowflake AZ are predominately gun lovers, liberty lovers, and don't-tread-on-me types. If my new home were about 100 yards east of its current location, I could have legally shot the snake.
Ours are Massassagua rattlers. I know a couple people who have been bit by them. Ive been struck at. Buddy saw this one the other day spraying his orchard
That has the exact same pattern and eye stripe as the one in my video.
You need to focus on the HEAD ...... dead give away on most venomous snakes in America.
I haven't seen a snake of any kind in years! That's one of the perks you get from snow.
