Look at long and short term fuel trims. This is the software compensation for what the O2/air fuel sensors are reading in the exhaust. Big negative numbers...say -15% or more (depends on a lot of factors) mean the engine Is getting excessive fuel and the engine management is shortening injector pulse to lean it out- IE Too rich. Leaky evap purge valve, leaky injector, fuel contaminated oil...lots of things can cause this.

Positive numbers mean the opposite. Air leaks, low fuel pressure, etc.

Also watch the MAF sensor. A very vague general rule is that the MAF sensor, warm, at idle, should be approximately the engine displacement in grams per second. A dirty or defective MAF can screw everything up.

Don't think it's a thing with Ford's, but some flex fuel GM's get confused with alcohol content levels being way high and resetting it corrects drivability issues. Updated software cures it.

And while we're on that subject, if he has access to alldata or Mitchell or others, check for technical service bulletins on this issue.
Would it be difficult to notice on the computer since its mainly an issue while starting? My dad did do an update to the pcm a couple weeks ago. Only had the issue arise one time before that and we thought maybe it was just a fluke at the time. My wife is fully convinced those updates mess everything up. And also we just got the truck exactly 4 weeks ago.

Went and ahead and put a fuel pump in it. Hopefully that will fix it. Will keep updated. Took me and my dad around hout and a half to replace it. Was pretty easy.

Did you drop the tank?
Yes. Since the truck has a lift it was easy to get under there to drop it. Worst part was getting the fill hose back onto the tank and that really wasn't terrible. There are 5 or 6 (can't remember exactly) different fuel line connections to take apart and they are all different. Just have to be careful not to break the clips. And don't forget to relieve the pressure before you take the first line loose. Don't ask me how I know 😆

Thanks,

Let us know if it gets better when the weather is warmer. I see this happening in my future

Will do. The large o ring for the fuel pump was fine so I reused it. The dealer said the new pump came with it but it did not. You might want to get one just in case it tears when taking old pump off. I think they are only $20. The pump was $380 plus tax.
