Hog hunting is illegal here and we are one of the few states winning the battle on hogs.

What do you do with them all, process any?

We mostly haul them to our Turkey Buzzard Recycling Factory (gut pile) but do take/ butcher 75-125# ones in cool weather that are not covered in fleas and ticks. We make some great pulled pork from the shoulders and hams and the tenderloins are great stuffed with cream cheese/jalapeños and then wrapped in bacon and smoked.
Used to have a place that would make great tamales, they would keep half and we would get half for supplying the meat. Unfortunately, they closed.

Yep, they exterminated 2 populations that popped up on wildlife management places. Now they are trying to stop them at the border. They go several miles deep into Oklahoma flying helicopters gunning them. Lots of states are looking at what we are doing and trying to copy it.

We are still looking at game cam pics from protein feeders as well as corn feeders trying to determine candidates for this years target list.
This is one of the cull bucks we want taken before he has a chance to breed. The lack of decent brow times is a genetic issue we have had for over 20 years that shows up periodically. Decent size rack but not much mass and brow tines are dinky.
I will be hosting a couple young hunters this weekend for the Texas Youth Weekend and hope one of them can take this buck. Nothing I enjoy more than getting young folks involved with the outdoors. Some camp chores, some range time, great food and fellowship builds life long memories.

Ive got news for you he has already bred. Culling does zero for genetics on free ranging herds.

He has not bred THIS year as we are still weeks away from our rut in this area and bucks are still in bachelor groups here.
In years past he has disappeared during our season.
Surrounding ranches have the same management goals as we do and we share target bucks so we have over a 30 mile “ free range” area under this umbrella so that is much larger than a free range bucks home range.
I do agree that genetics is the hardest to manipulate and is of limited value compared to age and nutrition.
Most of our member hunters would not take this deer but it would make a fine 1st buck for a youth.

Alot of antler genetics come from the does. You wiping out inferior doe genetics. Your "management" practices are contrary to what biologists agree which is you cant influence genetics with selective harvest of deer in a free range population. Call it what you want but your arent helping genetics.

Doe ran down on us last weekend.. I’m going for bucks but will take a doe down toward rifle season to start filling up the freezer for the year. I’m just waiting (excited) on the kids to plug one!! I would have field dressed the doe from last weekend but they didn’t want to take the shot.. I love showing my kids how to track & hunt and bow/gun safety.. There's always next weekend or after work.. ;)

Did the night shift last night, went out about 2am, not ideal weather for the thermal scopes with a light drizzle but was still successful. I took 2 down around 3am and moved to a second spot and nailed these 2. My buddy was out also and scored 1 around 4am. While leaving the ranch this morning I saw multiple good bucks and we should have a great opening weekend next Sat/Sun.
Time to start getting my ingredients together to do my venison chili which has become the standard for our group during opening weekend.

I Love seeing this! As the Motor City Mad Mad Man Uncle Tedly Steadly says “I take my Kids Huntin so I don’t have to hunt for my kids” god bless you man! It’s a great thing to take kids outdoors. I don’t have kids, but I’m taking my cousins son out (with his dad of course) to my cabin this weekend for his first bow hunt. Gona show him the ropes of hunting and introduce him to deer camp. I love teaching kids About hunting and conservation like my Father did me. You can tell the difference from a kid that hunts, and ones that don’t. ;)

A view from my bow stand on my birthday a few days ago. I always take my birthday off to sit in the woods. A day in the woods/stand is better than a day at work! No luck that day, but seen 5 the shooter was too far behind me to get a shot off. I’ll be out there this week yet. A lot of rain and heavy wind this morning so I’ll let it calm down a bit.
