P1000 Winch rope reliability?

I personally switch to a plow strap for the winter months. Either way I'd suggest using the roller fairlead as it's less friction for the repeated area of the rope getting used. The beauty of synthetic is that if the rope does break you can tie a knot in it and keep plowing.

Good tip on tying a knot. I have a Warn plow with a small pulley that the winch cord goes through, back to attach the hook on the bumper. A winch strap wouldn't work and I'd never heard of one till today! For no more than I use my plow, I m guessing the rope will be a non issue.

I have the same Warn plow/pulley setup on a dedicated Yamaha Grizzly 700 EPS. Been using the same damn synthetic rope for all 14 years. I did swap out the aluminum hawse for a roller fairlead. I think the rope has only broken twice in those 14 years - certainly not worth spending a bunch of $$ changing chit out. I figure I've got a hundred years or so more to go before that synthetic rope runs out after being broken/re-tied.

I don't recommend using the synthetic rope for plowing.
The problem is, the roll of rope on the drum will losen up and the working end will bury itself in the coils of the rope - causing friction, heat and breaking the rope.

I recommend a plow strap.
In the link below I show how the strap attaches to the WARN plow.
The 1st year i switched out the haws fairlead for the fat lip roller fairlead.
Last year i just left the haws fairlead on and the strap did just fine.
Also, the first year I used duct tape to hold the strap on.
The glue was a mess to get off.
Now I have an eyelet and a 12" of para cord to hold it on.
The paracord dose not take any load, its just holding the strap until the weight of the plow tightens up the strap.

Tires: On my outing to test the front locker I pinched a rear tire. I was riding with 2 experienced p1k pilots so I dropped the tire pressure to 6psi to gain a little traction. By the time I got home one of the rears was noticeably low on air. I could see where the pinch was but it was not...

My place is in Northern Utah at 8,000 feet and we had 8" of snow just this weekend - I plow a lot.
I've only had wire rope (two Superwinch Terra 45s on two different machines), so I can't say whether synthetic or wire is better.
But across 10 years of using wire rope and a plow, I've had to cut 4 feet off the end twice. You can see the broken/frayed strands as it wears and choose when to cut it off. The repair takes $5 in cable clamps and a cutting tool. I like an angle grinder with the cable held in a bench vise.

I keep a couple of these cable clamps in my kit in case I need them on the trail.

PS: I like the idea of a strap, but it's too much of a pain with my winch mount. I have a KFI inverted mount inside the front bumper on a 2021 P1K5 LE and it would take a lot of work to swap back and forth.

I can't see the pictures for some reason. But you took the hook off your rope and tied/taped the strap on?

I thought I read on here that some guys pull their good rope off in the winter and use short scraps of old rope.

I can't see the pictures for some reason. But you took the hook off your rope and tied/taped the strap on?

I took a harbour freight tow strap, cut it in half and taped the cut end to the drum.
The cheap cast hook attaches to the plow.
I wouldn't try to pull anything with the HF hooks, but the plow is pretty low impact so I used it.

As dirtstiffs-1000 shows above there are ready made plow straps also.

That's the one I have. I've taken the winch rope off and put this on for a few winters now and back to the rope in spring. I also switch out the roller fairlead for the hawse. Believe I removed the winch the first time, now it's about a half hour job and no big deal.

If the synthetic rope on the ATV I use for plowing lasts another 11 years before I'm no longer able to use it, maybe I'll swap it out for a strap or something then ...

I’ve never had this happen, but I rewind my spool by pulling the buggy uphill.

if the synthetic line breaks you simply cut it off and re tie the hook end. No tools needed other than maybe a sharp knife.

I use my rig for other things and the plow isn’t always on. It’s nice using the same line for everything and not having to take the short strap on and off with the plow.

I thought I’d try a winch actuator plow when I bought my P3-1000 thinking that having some float would allow the plow to stay on the ground over dips and dives in the driveway. Tried it once so far but the jury is still out…

With a UHMW edge, the float doesn't matter, it slides smooth and quiet over the surface and you can scrape going forward or back. Zero complaints about float actually using it. Lots of perceived complaints from the internet
