I went with the non lv x4. I've not been in a lv to know the difference. My assumption is that for a given terrain and appropriate settings, the lv has marginal improvement over traditional. The bigger value would likely be situations where you are rock climbing and want the soft setting, and once you clear the obstacle you'd like to haul ass, but your soft setting sucks for that. You tolerate it rather than stopping, getting out and changing the setting because your group is on the go and you'll be at the next obstacle where you'll want soft settings again soon. A remote clicker to get between 1, 2 and 3.settings would be a great compromise between convenience, control and complexity.
