Over the weekend I ordered the TTC 6" LT kit for my P1K5. A couple weeks ago I changed out my stock shocks for the Rough Country Vertex adjustable shocks. When i received the shocks the preload was all over the place. I did a little digging and came up with 2" on front and 1 1/4" on back. (the digging came from various users on face book and forums opinions) I set my shocks to these numbers and installed them. they seem to ride great as far as I can tell.

Upon deciding to upgrade the rest of my suspension to the TTC 6" LT kit I started looking into the install procedures of that lift. The instructions state to add 1.5" to 1.75" of preload to the shocks. with that said I'm left a little uncertain as I have nothing from Rough Country stating what the preload should be.

Does anyone have any experience running this combo? I understand its hard to give an exact answer but a starting point would be great. Maybe I'm over thinking this and I should start by just adding to what I already have on the machine.

Ps I tried to contact RC for this info and was told they don't know.

Jared at TTC can probably give you some good starting numbers if you call him. He's very good with customer support, and the phone seems to be his preferred communication.

I did a thread about my 3" TTC with Fox shocks and preload, but I don't know how much applies to the RCs.

I talked to him for several minutes about it yesterday. His suggestion was to call RC and get their preload suggestion and then add 1.5”

Even though it's long travel, your shock geometry is pretty much standard, right? I would assume they're probably not all that familiar with the TTC kit but I'd just start with the standard preload and go from there.

You can go deep with this stuff measuring and calculating sag and all, but it's easy to overthink up front. Get it together, set your ride height, and you'll be good to get started. You can tweak as you go along and learn how it rides.

I think I did all of that sag stuff in the thread I posted.

My issue is that RC can’t even give me their stock preload numbers. When my stocks came they were all set to different numbers. None were the same. I just want to know where to start in order to keep from blowing out the new shocks.

Did you have fox oe shocks or standard oe shocks before the rough country shocks?

For what it is worth this is what I would do:

If you had the non adjustable OE Shocks I would have taken measurements (machine measurements. Front bumper to the ground, tailgate letter N to the ground) first with the OE Shocks to determine your current ride height. Then confirm the adjustable rough country shocks are set to give you the same ride height the original shocks had. I would call that the "standard" pre load setting on the rough country shocks.

Then I would install the TTC lift kit. I would not change pre load yet. Then I would measure things again and confirm you achieved the 6" of lift. If you need more lift then I would start adding pre load.

If you had the OE fox shocks and can guarantee pre load was never changed you could still do the above with the fox shocks.

In theory you can't really blow out shocks based on pre load. Worst case scenario you don't have enough pre load so you do no achieve the height desired. Or you have too much pre load and it rides like a log wagon on crutches.

In theory you can't damage anything with too little pre load. It may just roll around like a bouncy ball.

In theory the only thing you should damage with too much pre load is the axles. They would be at a very steep angle and cause them to bind.

preload is just a guid and starting and To some point personal preference. If it was mine and it is not, I would set the preload what your desired ride height is and adjust up or down for desire ride. This will be different for some. The kit is going to soften the suspension some just from a leverage standpoint. I would start with the 2 inch preload all the way around and adjust from there. Alot is going to depend on overall weight

Every machine weighs a bit different with accessories, payload and people. I'd set it up how you usually ride and set sag.

I'd agree with Dave that 2" or 30% is a good number. I've run less and it's softer but I increased mine to 30 and I generally dont bottom out. Here's the exact post

Thanks for finding that Todd. I couldn't remember if it was under the other thread or not.
