So now that NC has legalized UTVs will the rear tires wear out on pavement?

The pioneer700 has locked rear end. Am I going to eat through a pair a tires every 100 miles riding on paved roads?. Thinking about trading up to a 1000, I can’t find if they have a turf mode.

Yes.
You can hear them squealing when turning on pavement in 2x4. But when I put my 1000 in turf mode, it doesn't.
Alignment will also be a huge issue that will eat up some tires.

I'm actually considering a second set of kicks just for local pavement riding. But I'm not sure how much road riding I will actually do.

Regarding the new law. The 700 can be easily made to qualify. The 1000 not so much as it does not have a park brake. I'm going to try and get the Hillybilly Brake to pass early Oct.

As a real park brake. I have a idea. But I'd rather wait till I have a answer on the Hillybilly Brake before continuing.

Man that sucks, I was thinking about getting a 1000. I can’t believe it doesn’t have a parking break. But they do have turf mode?

Yes. 1000 has turf but NO park brake.

If I'm reading the law right, you don't even need a windshield with a full helmet.
Just turn singal, horn, and park brake.

Sorry 500 guys, you don't meet size requirements currently.

What about the talons, do they have turf mode and a parking break? Because my 700 is screaming at 40mph. I really should upgrade it.

Thanks, why on earth would Honda not put a parking brake on them. I was completely sold on trading my 700 for a p1000 or talon

To your tire question, here's a set of Terrabites that are about 1yr old and about 3k miles. My road use ranges from occasional trips to post office up to high speed 10 mile+ trips to nearby trails. Brand new, followed by front, then rear. Hard part was finding a quarter . . . who carries cash anymore? :D

My P1000-3 has only been driven on blacktop pavement. The odometer is showing about 950 miles and the tires show very little wear. If the tires are worn out by 6000 - 8000 miles that will give me an excuse to buy a set of light truck winter tires. Any tires that don't howl so loud I have to wear ear protectors will be good.

Who needs a parking brake? The P1000s have a PARK position in the transmission which locks the driveline.

My P1000 is insured, inspected, and licensed in WV iaw with the stature. I had to add inside and outside rear view miorrors, turn signals, and a horn to pass inspection.

I suspect some state legislators were badly advised when drafting their ORV laws.

In NC you have to have a parking break
Yes, I know.

But did the NC legislature provide a definition of "parking brake?" If not, parking brake could be interpreted as "a device that locks the driveline" . . . or " a device that prevents the machine from moving when unattended" or other definitions.

Legislators are often stupid and their intent in new laws is unclear. Sometimes they intentionally write unclear words and phrases into new legislation for various tricky reasons.

Lawyers may challenge the new law in courts and judges will have to decide what a parking brake is. That's the game that legislators, lawyers, and judges play.

The fact that the new law requires a parking brake may be far from the final word on the issue.
