Polaris Xpedition SxS

Sounds like a technicality, maybe there is a work around.

The SXS companies should be working to reclassify, just think about how many more machines they would sell.

Their already on the government s*** list for fire issues and CPSC accident reports.

Plus you have states like mine that you'd have to pay taxes on tagged vehicles every year based on book value.

They'd need to get ahead of alot of stuff first, instead of just making one and letting consumers figure it out.

I don’t know at what point but I believe gross vehicle weight comes into play. As an individual you can make a lot of things street legal as a one off. But lawyers and safety regulations get involved if you try to do so for sale to the public.

Technically anyone can build a plane and fly it…up to a certain size/capacity. Think ultralights. But at some point (which I’m ignorant on) you have to get a pilots license to fly a plane of size and possibly above a certain altitude. I’m sure Mr Go Ogle could tell us some actual details around it.

Essentially if the threat to public safety is big enough (or there is money to be made or protecting others already making money in the market) then it becomes a cost barrier to make it less financially viable.

Taken as a whole @JB's posts are the most reasonable.

One thing to consider, if you where to invent the 2 wheel motorcycle tomorrow there is no way the government would allow you to throw a leg over 160+ hp and ride it on the street.
Just sayin...

I ask again: At what point does it stop?

Honestly, I'd just go buy a jeep (or Bronco/4-Runner for you less sophisticated types). Yes, SxS's are a different experience...but not when you start "needing" a full cab, A/C, Heat, Etc...

Remember...this whole thing got kick-started with 660cc, 54" wide machine.

Yeah if you were starting out at go with the current mindset…. gasoline wouldn’t be approved to run ICE’s either. The emissions, the “danger” of refueling and the storage of such a “volatile” and “explosive” fuel. Oh the humanity of it driving through all the neighborhoods and killing the innocent children.

It is pretty simple actually….It stops when consumers stop buying them.

The same reason the KRX went from guys buying them at 14k/15k when several members were leaving the P1k5’s to a year later dealerships selling the KRX at 25k because they couldn’t keep them in stock. Now a local dealer has a couple listed at 18k today.

These companies aren’t stupid. They see dust and noise complaints on the forums and satisfaction surveys and third party products. So they build something to fit the desire of the consumer. They’re in business to make money. If they didn’t think it was going to make money for them, they wouldn’t do it.

Supply and demand is economics 101.

I was thinking more along the lines of at what point do people start looking at 40 and $50,000 side by sides and decide they'd rather just go buy a street legal 4x4 and be able to drive it down the road?

Honestly my threshold is lower than most here on the forum. I’m not sure I’m going to justify the 20k price point “most” of the SxS’s are already at.

The amount of money that can be pulled from the market is amazing.
But for a company like Popo they already had the base vehicle - adding a few shinny bobble's dose not take much investment.
Adding a high end vehicle to the portfolio looks good and it is profitable.
It's like Acura having an NSX sitting in the show room.
Most people are going to buy an Integra.

A part of the market that I think is often overlooked on this forum is the guys like me that use sxs as an all day tool. Mine is for farming and ranching. I totally think this is way to expensive, but I know I'll see neighbor's using them eventually. Guys already had polaris machines that had 20,000 miles, power windows, and full hvac. As already stated above, you could already customize your polaris to this level. Now it's just in the catalog. In the sandhills of Nebraska, the sxs are exactly what you need to quickly get from point a to b. No roads necessary. Another advantage with the sxs's out here is visibility around cattle and versatility to move cows. Our pickups can get you there with a bed full of tools/materials, a jeep/bronco can do it smoother and faster, but a sxs can do some of both at the same time. The ads talk all about the overland guys, I would guess our local polaris dealer has one sold locally very soon though.
Personally I'm really enjoying the performance of my 22 p1000-3 and honestly don't think I will ever go back to the ranger. I do really miss my polaris cab though. It's frustrating how bad the honda cabs are when you've seen how absolute simple polaris has made the cabs seal well on their platforms. We can all agree on one thing though--belt drives suck.
