Which part costed so much? the trail pass or did they get fined for what was in the cooler?

I doubt they were checking in the cooler for trail passes. I’ve heard upwards of $200.00 on some Arkansas trails.

Ya can't hardly have beef with them saying that ya can't drink on the trails and also have beef with them saying no kids under 6. Ya either want a family friendly experience or you want an adults only experience.

I went to Rush OffRoad in KY and we will never go back for the sole reason with that place is covered in beer cans.

Alcohol + driving on the side of a mountain = really ugly accidents.

Plus HM is state run, I really have never understood the beef with the no alcohol policy. No one ever complains about not being allowed to drink and drive on the way in? Are they supposed to watch you drink on the trails and pretend when you come into town for gas or lunch you weren't drinking as you drive down city streets?

I like to drink a beer now and again too but come on a little common sense here. It's a state-run park that encourages people to drive on city streets and shop at local businesses. There's no way an open container policy would work.

Very well said and I agree. Now with that I will say I too have been quilty of drinking on the trail. But never at HM state run trails.

Beer is what was in the cooler... Beer is not allowed on the trails. Even if it is unopened and in a cooler. The fine was substantial from what they told me, but the over reaching law enforcement was the worst part. No breathalyzer test was given, no beer was open.

They don’t give breathalyzer test here either. If you are on the park property with alcohol period it’s a ticket.

Im guilty of drinking on the trails years ago. I had an eye opening experience going uphill in my rzr, got bouncing around and ended up facing downhill quickly, I was lucky thats all that happened as it could have been much worse. I no longer drink when I ride or carry beer. But I am also almost always conceal carrying as well, so wont have a beer at lunch even if its allowed. When we are back at the campsite at night, thats a different story.

It sucks the people got fined, but then again, when you knowingly break the rules, its hard to blame anyone else when you get caught. Some of the guys I ride with carry beer and drink, they know the chance they are taking and are willing to risk it. Cant blame anyone else if they get caught.

You did not mention what they were charge with, but I ASSume it was possession and not DWI. Intoxilizer test would only be performed for DWI, to see what is in your blood, that is not needed to see what is in the ice chest ...... lol.

Here in Colorado the "Stay The Trail" laws are strongly enforced but the rectal ports have to be caught first. What turns my crank however is we pay the annual license fee to ride these trails but bicycles ride the same trials for free and they always are going off the trails and riding wherever they want.

Depends how the statutes are written... for example, in Ky a conservation officer can search your vehicle if they suspect you for taking game illegally. No warrant necessary.

I would piggy back on this and suggest that when you buy a trail permit you may be submitting to a cooler search. I haven't read the fine print because we don't carry alcohol, but I don't think it's too far of a stretch that they would slide that in there.

Very possible... not to mention most probably don’t say no when asked, even if the cooler is full of beer. It happens all the time with vehicles. Da popo is sly like that...

Exact reason I don't drink on HM trails is because I carry when I ride there. Other places I decide before I leave camp, beer or gun. When I do bring beer I limit the amount I bring.

It’s public property or property open to the public, makes sense that there’s going to be rules. I’m real glad that I have a surplus of private property to ride in Oklahoma and plenty of National Forest to ride in Arkansas and New Mexico that has zero enforcement on the trail.

Totally different matter than my post. As for 'searching', that depends ...... I don't know what rules they have posted there. It is possible that when you sign in/pay up, that you are agreeing to vehicle being searched. Also it is possible they were 'asked' if their SxS could be searched. Yes the Sxs would have the same protection as your car on the public roads.

Addiction? I thought it was a way of life! I joined a Country Club once, when the boys got into playing golf, it was cheaper than paying for three green fees twice a week. When they grew out of that I was relived, can you imagine a Smitty CC member? HA! That's cool!
