Today, I went to one of the local grocery stores and I was looking for some red potatoes. They had a bunch of 3 pound bags. Each one of the bags all of the potatoes within were developing eyes. Eyes are basically a potato sprouting if you did not know that. I let them know and they gave me a deal and said they’d sell them for a dollar a bag. 23 bags at 3 pounds apiece for a dollar apiece. It came out to $24 and some change for 69 lbs of seed potatoes of which I’ll plant in my tater bed and at least triple the yield!

Planted the 69 lbs of potatoes today using the Ruth Stout method, by tilling the soil, laying the taters spaced in rows and covered with loose rotting hay. They has many beneficial uses the potatoes will grow up into the hay and as more foliage comes up you keep covering it with more hay (basically hilling around each plant). When it comes time to harvest the potatoes will be all clean and not covered in dirt. Plus the rotting hey gives organic material back to the soil, releases nitrogen to the soil and into the potatoes growth, which nitrogen, if you don’t know is good for vegetative growth of all plants. Plus, the hay also helps to block weeds from growing. The last thing is it also retains moisture in the soil reducing the need to water often.

I also pulled up all the old fences around the old original garden that surrounded the chicken house and was able to till those garden beds as well. I will be planting besides the blackberries Logan berries and raspberries I’ll probably be planting cauliflower collards strawberries some squash and who knows what else in there…

The soil here really is quite beautiful deep dark black and rich and lots of loamy material. It doesn’t hurt that I keep adding organic mulching material each season.

Check out the spring I’m improving. Right now it’s about 2.5 feet deep. There’s a buried cistern that the original owners back in 1939 installed. It’s filled with sediment but I’ll be clearing that out as well…I have water gushing forth everywhere around here…I’m thinking that not a bad thing especially in north Idaho!

I’d imagine most of us would prefer to in a way, ignore what has happened in the past to various countries around the world where they have struggled with politics independence corruption and so many other facets that face a modern society. I believe it’s also a strong possibility that our own country may either be facing a slow boil of our God-given rights or the possibility of a Civil War.
I feel that in some ways it might be good to study what others around the world throughout history or at least a somewhat modern history have gone through when their society collapses. Without being too alarmist or sharing fear porn I’d like to start sharing maybe some videos about this subject. As an example what happened during the Bosnia and Herzegovina conflict. What people like you and myself had to go through every day just to survive. There have been other nations that have gone through similar situation’s like Argentina and Venezuela and I believe that studying this past history of ongoing conflict may give some insight to how we as a people and an extended family here on this forum might get a bit of insight to steal ourselves and prepare both mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally for a somewhat possible outcome in our if not our children's near futures.
I know that this is not the most popular subject here but I also know that some of you find some of the stuff interesting and I hope that what I can share will help. Thank you

Year ago when I worked at the shop we hired a bunch from Bosnia and they would work 80 hours a week. every year or so they would go home and get more family and bring them back. The young one who spoke some English was talking about dead bodies laying all over the street and having to step over people riddled with bullets and blown apart to the point they were unrecognizable. hard to imagine growing up in a world like that. I agree and believe that our country is not going in a good direction. I just pray that it never gets to that point.
