10 seconds with a battery grinder
Well...........that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but yeah, if somebody wants your trailer. Personally I’ve been hauling trailers crisscrossing the country for 43 years and never lost one. I believe that a locked trailer is sufficient deterrent. But for people carrying bolt cutters, grinders, hammers and FLGS, chains and whatever else might be useful in swiping trailers, they’re probably going to get a trailer.

It's no exaggeration...these new battery grinders with their thin cutoff wheels are amazing. Also real crazy is a Makita 18v metal cutting circular saw I have. In five minutes you could have the entire side of a typical gun safe removed with pretty much no damage to any of the contents. Nothing is safe anymore....

Ten seconds is an exaggeration, but like I said, people out hunting for a trailer to steal with all the tools are not likely to come home empty handed.

Well, that’s impressive. I wonder how much time it would take a thief to put my lock in a vice so he could have a nice controlled environment like that. I’m not concerned, like I said, 43 years of dragging trailers across America and I’ve never lost one. But a professional criminal, properly equipped, out looking for a trailer, yeah, he’s not going home empty handed. That’s when, as others have pointed out, you hope your trailer was insured....

Don't need a vise. I cut locks off regularly on the rental stalls I help manage. Just hold the lock and about 5 seconds it's over.

When my trailer is parked and not hooked up I use a Proven Industries Hitch lock. They have a wheel lock that is worth checking out for when parked and hooked up.

All,
I have tried many locks, the best combination of locking covers and locks I have been able to find is made by “Fort Knox Locks”. Using a highly functional and extremely hardened steel. Yes! Of course it can be cut, torched, grinded and trailer ultimately stolen.
My only way to keep my trailer and contents safe was to finally cut off the bulldog hitch and fabricate a quick release flange system that is taken completely off the trailer and locked inside my vehicle or home.

Pin lock, latch lock, and I recommend a tailgate lock too. Nothing's perfect, but I haven't had one stolen yet.

Just an FYI-
I used to feel better knowing I had a tongue lock on mine until I saw where thieves just wrapped the safety chains around their ball and hitch and take off. Then they can cut the lock later.
Heck, I have done it a time or two just to move it a few feet forward.
I considered taking my chains off during storage but then they can bring their own too.

Cheap locks keep honest people honest and thieves know how to overcome so choose wisely.

Wondering if with someone else, leave one cell phone hidden, then find a phone app if stolen.
