Ham radio questions please help

With a quad radio, you either need an adjustable tunable antenna that can tune all 4 bands (pretty darn spendy ) or at least 2 antennas for say 2 meter, and 10 meters. It's a pita, but that's the options. Bear in mind cb 11 meters, and 10 meter ham frequencies depend a lot on conditions, where 2 meter really doesn't.

All that will work fine. That's a lot of bang for your $$$. I would suggest a dual band 2m/440 antenna for the vehicles though. There around $40.00

Ok I ordered the two handhelds. I found those I showed you for 64 so that's awesome. Still looking for a reasonable radio for the pioneer. Could you please walk me through a little when the get here?

Ok so I'm dumb in ham radio. Used cb's some but looking max distance/value and know nothing on this matter. From what I'm seeing on line CB doesn't make sense for the price. Looking for probably 50w base unit to install inside the pioneer and a good handheld 8w. Looking at baofeng so far the reviews for the price look great. We have a 200$ cap as my wife received a gift card late for her bday and it's time to have better communications. Please help

As a licensed Ham radio operator for the last 35 years, I can't believe how easy it is today to get a Ham Radio Technician license. Back in the day we had to learn a lot of electronic theory and morse code. While there is some study involved, most people with no electronic background (including my wife) can pass the test with about 8 hours of study and test practice. Each person operating a radio in the Ham radio bands MUST have a license! Ham's are very sensitive to non-licensed operators and the fines and / or imprisonment is very stiff for improper operation.
I have many different ham radios and one of the very best I have found for distance (and low lost) is the BeoFeng UV-82HP. This is a high power 8 Watt hand held for $60. The Beofeng / "chinese" radios are very hard to beat given their very low cost ($15 to $60). The Chinese radios on Amazon.com (BeoFeng and others) can be programmed to almost any VHF or UHF frequency. You will need to order a programming cable and download a program for your specific radio to program the frequencies you wish to use.
Many people that don't have Ham radio licenses purchase the low cost Chinese radios and program them to use the standard the GRMS / FRS (public use frequencies) like the Motorola talk about radios and store bought walkie talkies use. While these frequencies are legal to use, the Chinese radios are technically not legal to use on GRMS/ FRS frequencies; they have removable antennas (possible use a higher gain antenna) and may also have much higher power than is allowed.
I use my UV-82 HP (on ham radio frequencies) in my Pioneer. I have a holder for it under the dash with a remote antenna and a speaker mic. Works great and I also take it with me once I get to my destination by simply unplugging the external antenna and putting the rubber duck antenna back on - for hunting/ fishing. The UV 82's or UV 5's are GREAT low cost hand held radios (they also have FM radio and a built in flashlight).

i just got two of these as a set for right around that same money. Spent a little time as I always do before a purchase and beofeng keeps coming up everywhere I hate being a follower but with reviews it hard not to. Can't believe how reasonable these have become. We need To have communication but after a couple mishaps it needs to be trustworthy. I absolutely plan on getting a license and will be studying along with a few others in our group. Very excited

^^^^^ that depends on how and where you are going to attach it. Magnetic base, or a straight type shaft.

I think a Firestick non ground plane 2 meter antenna would work great. There only 2 ft high, and can be mounted pretty much anywhere you can think of. I would also suggest a quick disconnect so you can take it on and off quickly.
