Nice work! We are on the list from the state for a UTV. They are government surplus, nothing like that. The first one they offered was a 2wd mule. We declined as we need a 4x4 for the mud we see during fire season. Hoping something decent roles around. I'd like to buy one that would be ours, but not in the card.

This is our rescue truck just above the extrication equipment. The truck is an 07 with 8000 miles on it. The box is from 1974. A new box is 70,200 not including any lighting or removing the old box and mounting a new one. I have duct tape over it till we figure out what we are gonna do.View attachment 418902there is no excuse that any US fire ,police, should be using equipment like that, shame on the state/ feds

Final monitor is installed. Our rescue truck had another hole pop up. Gorilla tape to the rescue.

Having to patch holes with tape sucks. Not sure how long that gorilla tape will hold up but next time get some eternabond tape. It’s made for RV roofs. It will stick to about anything and lasts a very long time. It has done very well on my camper roof. Comes in different widths and lengths

I am hoping we are going to get rid of this truck after wildland season.

What if I told you its not even the worst truck in the fleet? The far right brush truck in the above picture broke down twice and caught fire once last year. The year before we had a transmission cooler issue and was down a week during our fire season.

Our 1990 tender has no working gauges, air pressure takes 8-10 minutes to build, tank has a slight leak, no direct fill into the tank, no air conditioning, and sketchy wiring. Sometimes the transmission wont shift. It was a dump truck before it was converted for firefighting in 2003. FEMA told me I was close to getting a new one last go around just wasn't quite old enough when it came time to pass out money. They cut the budget to the Assistance to Firefighter's Grant by $32.4 million this year, and I expect next year it will get even smaller. Vehicle grants are so competitive you have a roughly 2% chance of pulling one.

Kansas Forest Service got a UTV for us. 2004 Kubota Diesel. It's very muddy right now so we need to get it in service. Going to get it Friday. Basically it is government surplus. They permanently loan it to us. We equip it for firefighting and maintain it. When we are done with it, we give it back. One day we hope to be able to afford a Pioneer, Gator, Ranger, etc but we can't afford to turn this down. Pretty excited.

We picked it up Friday. There was a Kubota dealer nearby so we got all the fluids/filters to get her up and running. We got back about 1800 and by 2000 we had it going. She isn't a speed demon, but the cab is in good shape (minus some floor rot). She runs strong and the heat and ac work which wasn't expected. We have it set up to fight fire already, and a member is working on fixing the floor.

We had our superbowl Friday. Wind whipped grass fire with multiple structures threatened. We lost some structures and saved many more. No primary residence were lost. The fire was running so fast it went around a some houses. The fire ran 5 miles. Our trucks and volunteers are worn out. We have 2 out of service but hope to get them going today.

If anybody is in Eastern KS we are selling raffle tickets to try and get some funding together to upgrade equipment.

Red flag warning again tomorrow. Lots of prescribed fire today, which makes me nervous for a rekindle. We cleaned air filters, checked fluids, made repairs, ensured they had their hand tools, washed them, etc. today.

Do we have to be local to join the raffle? Or can we send Paypal/Zelle etc?

That's a great question. I can ask. We are doing a Henry Golden Boy in .22 lr from a local FFL who is also a firefighter. Not sure if they would want to ship to your FFL or just want to keep it local. This is our first fundraiser.

One thing I was adamantly against in our fire district was a big heavy brush truck. However my mind has been changed. We need something that carries more water than our 200-300 gals on our brush trucks. Neighboring department arrived with their 5 ton and it was a firefighting machine. Surplus through our forest service is defunct, and we are looking at close to 50k to get the truck, then you still have to equip it.
