I'm at a crossroads! I have a 99 Chevy C2500HD with a MPI 7.4. I'm having some oil pressure troubles and I'm thinking about a 6.0 swap.

So looking for some input on weather to rebuild/ shortblock the 7.4 or just go ahead and do a 6.0 swap. I dont put but maybe 2k miles per year on this truck.
7.4 is going to have more usable torque than the 6.0 gasser because it’s lower in the rpm range.

I had a 7.4 in a 94’ that I actually liked, and a 6.0 in a 03’ company truck, I felt like I had to rev the hell out of it to tow anything. Never felt right. My 14’ 5.3 was the same way.

really looking forward to Fords new pushrod 7.3

I have owned a 1999 and a 2004 Chevy 2500HD 4x4's. One I bought both new, and wish I had never sold the 1999! The 7.4 would pull anything and run forever. The 2004 had a 6.0 and was absolutely gutless in the mountains. Plus, the 1999 got better gas mileage! I would stick with the 7.4. Just regrind the crank, new pistons and rings (std) and replace the lifters. If yours is like mine was there was no wear on the valves, and the rebuild should take one weekend and cost about $800. Buy parts with GM part numbers on eBay. After all, it is a farm truck. Don't go crazy... make it reliable, and call it good.

Wish I could have found a decent 99 or so with a 7.4 and auto transmission. Maintenance is a piece of cake and dependability is very good.

Well I may have decided on what I am going to do. If I can find something i can afford!
I know this is way overkill but I may be able to get something for less than a 1 ton dually.

I've have a 95 with a 454 and a 2004 limited edition 6.0 LQ9, no it isn't a super sport. The 6.0 is a better hot rod truck that will work. The 454 will always out work it in lower rpm range, with some TLC the MPGs can be brought up. I would keep the 454. Besides the truck is already set up for it.

In fact I still know people that would love to have a 3/4 or 1 ton with a 454.

Well decided to pull the pan on the 7.4 and replace the oil pump. This is what the rear main bearing looks like!
20191215 145312 NOT GOOD
Now I guess I have to make a decision now.

Anyone have access to a deal on long blocks?
