Kind of surprised that National Geographic is that inaccurate!!

@Kurt thank you for the great information, many of us are going to be first time travelers to the area. I know there will be at least 2 of us traveling from Texas to this event. A couple TT and a motorhome with trailer, so the best route info is priceless to us. I'm sure I will be bringing this back up as the time gets closer.

Apparently we are not allowed within the town limits of Ouray and Telluride in our SXS’s. I also learned that all unlicensed OHV/UTV’s using the alpine loop are required to have (in addition to our Colorado off road permit) LIABILITY INSURANCE!!!!!

I have full coverage also, but thought there may be some people coming that don’t.

Lake City you can ride for sure. Local PD will not stop you. Leave city limits and get behind or pass a State Trooper yes you will get a ticket. Look online Silverton there are some routes you can take thru town. The camber of commerce has a map posted on line. Ouray yes you will need to trailer but it is a great town.
Insurance for sure. Take a picture on your phone and you will always have it. I brought proof of ownership as well. Texas we get a title so just made a copy and had it with me.

Ouray doesn't allow OHVs in town but Silverton and Lake City do. Here's the rules for operating an OHV in Hinsdale county (eastern half of the Alpine Loop including Lake City).
