When I bought my new-to-me 2016 Pioneer 1000-5, I was told the only real “issue” the seller knew of was that the receiver hitch was tweaked. Of course, there were several things I considered issues that he did not. That’s beside the point.

At one time there was a rear basket in said receiver that was backed into a tree. I suppose the basket was stronger than the receiver (probably not a good sign) and it gave the receiver a facelift.

I have a welder and some mediocre fabrication skills so it was not a deterrent for me. I spent an evening cutting and grinding off the old, twisted receiver to get it down to the portion of the frame that extends past where the rear a-arms attach. From there, I designed a plan in my head using almost exclusively materials I had laying around my garage. I did have to order a receiver tube. It’s mostly mocked up though I need to adjust some symmetrical issues. It’s not burned in yet. Here is where I am so far:

5ba9fc5bccf70459c9227bea5e200e1f

Ace10d2be2d53a88b1bef9506cb5bfdf

This isn’t intended to tow anything of substance but I think it will be quite a bit stronger than OEM. Anyone else had to do this? I think I rear that Honda strengthened the design in the later models.

Looks good.

The 2016 models could only handle 200 lbs of upward force and it would rip off. If you left the hitch in and went rock crawling you would push it up in no time.

Forced a redesign for 17+ models.

I couldn’t get the extra vertical pieces to work out because of the angle of the frame. I still think this will be plenty strong.

And one of my welder setup just to show you guys what I’m working with.

While you're at it reinforce the rear frame. The 2 rear stub rails are about 24in. I cut the flat plate off the bottom side of that last 6 Inches that's angled up by the hitch. Then welded in a piece of tubing that fits inside the rail. Hard to explain I'll try to find a picture.

Since I’ll be burning all this in on the frame there at the back, you think that gets the job done?

Not the best pics but you can see where I welded. I welded In a nut to bolt the rear bumper to.060483e3781fa8b0fde8a4a952663945Dcfc5f5bcc0fd0bce5e28c430b320638Ace095d391748a30a72901749989e9de3ff0ca0f714ce96b01894d4f631a9a878b4338f333c9c7120d7a81c721935228

I think it's a great start and your welds look good. Since you know what you're doing and already gonna need some spray paint, might as well reinforce the lower rails. I think it definitely helps. And wont cost 10 bucks for a little steel. I think I used 1in square tubing.

That’s what I have... did you get the aluminum spool gun?

No, I don’t have one. I don’t know how much use I’d get out of it. Do you have one/use it much?

Yes.. for the money and ease of use it’s a nice addition. Between boats, trailers and a host of other aluminum stuff.. it’s been worth it to me. Just can’t use the same gas for aluminum.

Hopefully I’m not too late but this may be a good time to consider a rear winch mount which also supports the hitch.

It ties the top of the hitch into the frame above it.

Nice job on the mounting bracket. Do you have the factory muffler or after market muffler to get the clearance for the winch? Also what size winch is that? I picked up a 4500lb winch on clearance at TSC for only $75 and really want to mount it back there but don't have the room to do it. Just wondering what setup you had back there to make it work.

Had to use a aftermarket muffler and there’s plenty of clearance as it has been on there for a couple years with no issues.

It’s the Honda 4000 which is the same size as the warn 4000 and 4500.

@knuckledeep makes a nice winch mount that works with factory muffler.

@ohanacreek has one and will probably show a picture

Would love to see pictures of @knuckledeep winch setup. Not interested in having to go with after market muffler if I don't need to. Don't want the machine any louder. My days of loud machines are gone.

It’s sticks out but it’s only hit a couple of times and that was on fairly extreme black trails.
