I am looking to upgrade from the 700-4 to 1000-5 LE
I have a question though the p1000 put out 72 hp and the Polaris General 1000 cc put our 100 hp.
Why do two 1000cc engines put out such a large gap in hp?

thank you

There are too many reasons to list. Cams, bores, strokes, valves.

Engine hp isn’t the same as rear wheel hp. The type of transmission and drivetrain loss plays in a lot. I don’t know off hand, but I wonder if anyone has dyno charts for a couple 1000cc utv’s?

Engines are tuned for the application.
Corvette has more power, truck has more torque.
Diffrent tools for diffrent jobs.

FYI, the p1k is more like the Popo Ranger than the General (or maybe in between the two).

My friends have a General. They see it when it comes out of the shop. Broken A/C gear in transmission, broken shaft to A/C, and a blown clutch at engine that did $1,500 damage. Lucky they bought extended warranty, but it expires soon. May be up for sale soon.

Exactly this.

Some are tuned for more HP for higher top speed, while others are tuned for more torque for hauling and towing.

What they said, including about the General.
Turbo can almost double the hp. Note that some 1000 cc Rangers top out at 50 mph.

Check this list:
You'll typically see turbos used for high horsepower applications, while typically seeing superchargers for high torque applications. Not exclusively, but predominately.

Turbos need to "spool up", which means boost doesn't happen right away. OTOH, a supercharger provides boost almost immediately. Top speed is achieved well into the upper RPMs and torque is best at the lower RPM range. Hence, the typical application of each.

Now when you start getting into super high performance and/or short distance performance, all bets are off. For example, a top fuel dragster or similarly focused vehicle needs everything it can get in just 1/4 mile, so you don't want to wait for a turbo to spool up. Top fuel cars aren't about one or the other (HP vs torque) - they are about BOTH. Sometimes you'll see both a supercharger AND a turbo in the same vehicle for this very reason.

Turbos are found more often on your standard OEM vehicles (e.g., Ford EcoBoost) because they tend to perform better when it comes to fuel economy. So CAFE requirements have a say in the matter.,

What do is need to compare other than looking at HP?
I am going to put in an order for p1000-5LE tomorrow figured if i wanted a dunes machine I’d go with a turbo machine.
