metal pipes rusted out. has anybody replaced them with just plain radiator hose?

I think the problem with doing that is going to be abrasion of the hoses over time. You will have to secure them in a way that vibration and constant movement from driving around doesn't cause leaks. It's not impossible to do, just something to remember when routing and securing the new hoses in the chassis.
