So which aluminum one is the best to get? Been pondering either plastic or aluminum. Sorry for the threadjack
My 2 cents…
I did the Trail Armor 1/2” UHMW or whatever it’s called on my P1K it slides over rocks real easy and it has held up well so far.
Aluminum will bend if hit hard enough and stay bent, the plastic will flex when hit but return to it’s original form. But either way you go it’s way better than the tuperwear one Honda uses. @SuperATV also has a 1/2” UHMU that is real good.

I was looking at that one from Super ATV that’s UHMW or whatever…I guess I saw this post and started thinking that’s referred to as plastic but in actuality it’s not.

good. My thoughts were right from the start.

UHMW-PE *is* a plastic. It is the mechanically strongest long chain polymer available (that I'm aware of). 1" will stop a 45 ACP round at point blank range. It's almost as slippery as Teflon (but way stronger). It's very wear resistant (more so than some steels) so used for lining aggregate chutes and all manner of rubbing blocks in industry. Oh, and it's also expensive compared to many other plastics. I used it to line my tractor snow blower as snow tends not to stick to it and to line the skids so it doesn't mark driveways. Virgin UHMW is best, recycled and blended is cheaper, but probably not as good for demanding applications. If you're buying skid plates, might want to ask what type of UHWM they are using.

I have had the Rival Aluminum full skids on my P1 since 16’ they have been fantastic and have taken a beating from RRB a dozen times to the Rocks of Colorado And are still solid all u see is some scratches underneath. Dont know why folks dont like them? Might be the manufacture type? who knows? Mine also have great service holes in them. They have served me well. I didnt look into them for my Talon cuz I bought a bunch of stuff from SATV and I had a discount I aquired so It made sense to buy theres and they are nice as well, no complaints.

I haven’t researched yet, but will ask because it’s much easier…. Do the synthetic ones have service holes or do I have to remove them for every service. That’s something else for me to think about. I can handle the scraping and scratching and that horrible noise of aluminum on rocks if maintenance is easier!

As far as I know all have service holes. I’m also for the UHMW. They just slide very well over obstacles, nicer in snow and are I bit quieter as well. It’s preference though.

My 1/2" Trail Armor skids (Talon) came with openings already cut. They're small but they're there. I tried to enlarge one after install but the plastic was too tough and I can't see 'down there' anyways, so fuggit.

Super ATV 1/2" is ARMW
On their site, Super ATV calls their skid plate's proprietary blend of UHMW and (something), "ARMW".

I reckon it's safe to say it is UHMW-PE mixed with some other plastic. MY guess would be HDPE (high density polyethylene - same material used in many plastic bottles etc.).

I'm not a materials specialist or engineer, though I know UHMW is the benchmark in terms of mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and low friction. A blend may reduce material cost, make the resultant plastic easier to plastic weld or even mold.

No offense, but if I were gonna remove my stock aluminum skid plates, I'd be going for virgin UHMW. Companies reprocess UHMW scrap into new UHMW sheet, claim it has the same qualities as virgin material. I have no experience with that . . . however, a lack of experience or first hand knowledge has only rarely prevented me from forming an opinion, however wrong my opinion may be.
