Seat back

Changing the coolant in my pioneer 1000-5, had to take the seat back off to get to the bleeder plug. It had spots for 5 bolts, but only had 4. And two of the bolts broke off instead of breaking loose. Using a punch to make a dimple to keep the drill bit from walking, and this nut part pushed into the seat. I was only lightly tapping it too. Now, the slightest pressure from the drill bit pushes it back into the seat. I didn’t even use a punch on the other one, but can’t drill a hole in it because I can’t put any pressure on it either. Anyone else ever had this problem? Recommendations?

I don't have a solution for you, only here to empathize a bit

The Pioneers are notorious for trim bolts that would rather break off than come out, and you've hit one that's mounted into plastic with a nut insert. Once those nut inserts have broken away, I don't know of any way to get them back. Any attempt to use adhesives is bound to fail.

I think if I was facing this situation, my scorched earth plan would be to punch holes through my seat back so I can get a nut, washer, and socket extension in there to put it back together. Short of buying a new seat back, I don't have any other suggestions.

Thoughts on using jb weld to weld a bolt onto the nut inserts! And then just use a nut to fasten it to the bracket.

Can you replace the missing bolt? If so, why not mount it back up with 3 out of 5 bolts - it'd probably be fine. A bit more of a problem if both broken ones are at one end. .

Possibly. Another approach could be to try and get a rivet nut in there somehow, maybe by replacing some material.

Failing that, 3 of 5 will probably be fine.

I had another thought - what if you cut a few slots into the seat back plastic and fed a strap thru there to go around the frame tube? It could at least add some support to your jb weld job.

That sounds like a good idea. But I have it put back together right now. After jb welding the bolts, I let it bake in the sun for about 8 hours. It wasn’t the quick setting stuff either, so I hope it holds. If not, I’ll try the strap idea, I have a bunch of 1” wide Velcro straps that’s used to hold computer cables/phone cables together. Those would be the perfect straps to try that.
