Thinking of planning a ride to MI with some buddies for next year. We want to start in Northern Wisconsin and ride into Michigan. We would like to make a multi-day adventure trip and camp/motel along the way. After which, we will return to our truck/trailers in Wisconsin. Does anyone have any info. on riding in the U.P? Where to go, where to stay, places to see, cool trails?? Thanks.

What part of Northern Wisconsin are you leaving from? In June I road from Goodman WI to Copper Harbor Mi. Stayed in hotels. Once you get into Michigan it was mostly rail road grade.

We will probably leave from the Silver Cliff area as my in-laws have a cabin there. It looks like you can cross into Michigan either near Florence or west of there via the Nicolet State Trail. How many days did you take to complete your trip? I bet if it’s mostly grade, you can make miles fast. I would love to hear some more details of your trip like what trails you took and good hotels to use. Thanks!

I was there last weekend. I'm afraid I don't have much knowledge of the u.p we stayed at a real nice hotel in toivola. Can definitely recommend it. Bar, restaurant on site. Swimming pool , and gas across the street. Parkview Lodge and Grill – Trails and Ales
Just looked at their website. This place looks really nice. Defiantly wouldn’t mind staying there!

The riding restrictions in the U.P. are pretty loose compared to the L.P. which are also pretty loose. VVMapping is a good resource for DNR trails. There are links on this page for the MI ORV laws and an overview map which gives you the name of every DNR trail. You can purchase VVMapping for your GPS which will have all of the trails for the Great Lakes region and maybe more.

Sorry, I don't have any experience riding quads/SxS's on the West end, been in that area during the winter on sleds a few times, definitely some beautiful scenery. As @PistonHonda said, get yourself a copy of VVmapping....well worth it.

Agreed! VVMaping is your friend for all trails Michigan. The guy that does them is from Michigan. He also does trails all over the US in Regions, I used the Appalachian Trail region for the takeover The last couple years Was great. The mini SD card he gives you goes right in any Garmin or any device with that kind of slot. But the Garmin is the best, you use that same card for your updates. He gives u updates for free for the first year. I’ve had it for the last 5 and he just sent Me the Appalachian Trail Region maps out as a FREE update. Check him out!

I also have a cabin in Silver Cliff. We left from there and picked up another group in Goodman. We left around 8:00AM on Friday and ended up in Watersmeet mid afternoon with one stop for lunch in Florence. We stayed at the Casino. I would recommend it. We headed out on Saturday morning with our destination of Houghton. Make sure you stop at Bond falls if you go this route. We made Houghton late afternoon. The trail ends there with a locked gate. You need to call the police department to get an escort through town and across the bridge into Hancock. There is more information about this on Houghton web site. We stayed in Houghton on Saturday night and Sunday night with a day trip Sunday to Copper harbor. On the way back we stayed at Running Bear resort in Paulding. We did take the Nicolet state trail back. Got off in Long Lake and headed towards Fence. I used Orux maps App on a 7" tablet with the VV ORV Map. I highly recommend it. We never got lost.

Wow, great info everyone. This helps a lot. Looking forward to doing a multi-day trip with the machines. Never have done this before, but it’s always been my dream. I’ve heard that there’s some really cool old train trestles to cross in the U.P. Anyone ever encounter them?

We crossed a couple on the way from Watersmeet to Houghton. They had to be 80 to 100 feet in the air. very cool. The last pic is of one of the old train trestles. The picture does not do it justice.

We're planning the same kind of trip for next summer but all in MI. It will be a 3-4 day SxS trip through the U.P. to Copper Harbor. It should be interesting packing everything in the SxS and heading out. Good luck on your trip... maybe we'll cross paths!

The center picture is the trail that heads east out of Hancock. It looked like an old train bridge went across the top, but I am not sure.
Oh ok, I thought that you were on an old train tram and that might be a rocked cut through a small hill. It sure is a cool looking feature!!! Of course those cascades are fantastic too!!!
