P500 New tailgate

Hey Fellas,
Been wanting to do this for a while and finally got it done. 1.5” steel tube frame, 2” subframe slides into twin receivers (welded) onto Class V hitch. Class V is rated at 1600 lbs downforce and 16,0000 lbs tow capacity. Top is 3/16” aluminum, tie downs are track type mounted on sides of frame. 64.5” wide 34” out the back of box. Will be way stronger than stock tailgate even with solid tailgate straps.

Plan is to get it loaded today for initial run. Hahaaa Mudder, yes those reflective stripes are next! Have to wait till warmer weather to undercoat the frame. Will try to find 1.5” wide stripes as 2” are to wide. As it sticks out only 34” not gonna bother with extra tail lights the notion was to keep it simple, strong and relatively light.

As a suggestion for anyone else, please consider what you are towing.... the 2” subframe on mine will limit extreme angle trailer tongue movements which I clearly forgot (to consider) when having the shop I used design and weld. I just had a memory lapse, good news is the combo pintle hitch 2 5/16s ball sticks out a fair ways.

To attach the aluminum plate I used Rivnuts at each corner (3/8” stainless bolts) with aluminum oversized (head) pop rivets elsewhere. I’ll do some pix once loaded and test run.

Loaded P5 up no worries at all, even with plough on.😁
Kinda bummin as I still have lotsa salt on roads and it’s too cool to undercoat it. My Darlin draws the line at painting in the basement... heh heh. So for now will stick on the Conspicuity Tape and will paint/undercoat in a couple months. The patina colour matches the Tan colour on the truck so doesn’t looks bad and I’ve a wet media blaster when it warm out. Few more images.

If using ramps, are you considering some type of pins or something to keep the ramps from moving or kicking out?

Mudder, I do use folding aluminum ramps, the ones that fold longitudinally. I use ratchet straps on each ramp to secure, it’s quick easy and works. My understanding is that 80% of UTV/ATV incidents happen loading and unloading, in the work place. Probably higher out in the wild where stats aren’t kept, so yes I always use tie downs to secure ramps...always. When I put the summer 37” tires on the old truck, backing up the ramps can feel, well... Let’s just say you don’t wanna mess up.

Thanks Splorin, it is a bit of a pet work truck/pavement queen so it gets hot water pressure washed lots winter and summer. I’m guessing salt rates our West here are not as bad as back East, they try to make up for that by putting material through a 1” screen prior to mixing with the salt and spreading on our highways out here... Just the same, already turning patina brown as we speak...
