Hello, gentlemen...

So I just bought this bike with 115 miles on it from a dealer, Lapeer Honda..
On the trails here on our property it runs fine but idling it's a tad rough...so I kinda brushed that aside... So, I figured I would take the Ol' girl for a spin on the dirt backroads....

When it hits about 38-39, the engine spits and sputters.....drops below 38 and runs fine. When I hit 38-39, spit......sputter...again and again...~sigh~....

Do the ATV dealerships have computer setup to use on these bikes as a car dealership would with our vehicles ?
OBD-II/code readerrkind of setup?

Do they keep digital records for warranty service as if a new car was being served?

I'm irritated.....makes me wonder why the previous owner traded it in..... I could tell it had been in some deep(er) water when I took everything apart to clean and inspect... I do have a warranty but.....never had to use a Honda warranty.....makes me leary about where it's been..

In Greenbush, out in the woods with limited internet so apologies for the choppy post...dang phones...lol...

Thanks in advance,

GB

Totally normal.....unfortunately. I love my P5 but the speed limiter is my biggest complaint.

You are hitting the rev limiter totally normal, that is as fast it will go.

What the ?!?!.......

Honda's rev limiter makes the bike soud and feel like the engine is missing or a carb is starving ?!?!......

They couldn't even make it run smoothly at WOT ?!?!

That's disappointing.......

What year is it?
If 17 or newer, wait until you forget your seatbelt and hit 15mph......

Kind of hard to be pissed in my opinion.
I would say this is your fault for not asking salesman what kind of top speed you could expect out of it?

Apologies, should have made myself more clear...on my phone...sigh...

Don't care about the speed, although 42 mph would be better and was told 42 by the salesman and tech who walked through the bike with me..

Its the way the limiter is implemented.... spitting and sputtering is unacceptable. All the other honda ATVS I've had, and still have, are not controlled like that.. Limit, fine...just make it run smoothly at WOT....

Like every other manufacturer and the rest of the bikes they put out... that's all.

That's my gripe....

The limiter on my "16" kicks in at 43-44 MPH. I wonder if they vary that much?

I can appreciate your point. It can definitely be limited without smacking your hand constantly. Many bikes (and cars) just feel like the motor maxed out at whatever the electronic limit it is (rev or speed). The "bounce" off the limit on some models like the P500 can be annoying for sure.

Yep, that is the welcome message from your rev limiter.

I think in 17 they lowered it to 39mph or so when they added the auto shifting. 15-16 were 42-43mph if I remember correctly.

IvI' heard and read that they'll do 42~ish and that's what I was expecting..
I wonder if they changed the programming in the 17's....
Also, if Twi 17's next to each other would limit out ate the same speed?

Has anyone done a poll on the P500 top speed stock stating what year ?

For the poll purposes my 2015 cuts out at 41-42 and that speed is from my GPS. But it's red so it will so faster than other colors. Triggers will probably cut out around 37 because of the diamond plate.

Stock? Not many of those around these here parts.
In theory they would, but variables are abundant in the real world.
Also in the real world the suspension limits the trail speed anyway unless you don't like your spine and organs much.

Drag racing a P500 is a losing proposition (unless you're on the opposing machine) anyway so I wouldn't stress over it.

@Alan Yes sir Red is definitely the fastest color out there. It is worth at least as much as two stickers from per my seat of the pants meter.

2016 w 27" rubber will hit 42 on GPS....just a smidge faster than the red ones because it's blue....:p

Has anyone figured out if it's limiting based on the speedometer or from engine RPMs? I'm going to test this this wkd.
