Hi all. I know this is the SxS forum, but I'm in the market for an ATV and have been looking at the mid-size 450s and 500s like the Rancher. I know they work fine for single riders, but are the rear racks big enough for the random second passenger? I had an '05 Foreman 500 a number of years ago which was plenty big for two but am unsure of the new ones. Thanks.

----- yes ATV can ---the New generation Rancher is almost as big as your old Foreman.( riding on ATV double any distance is NOT Comfortable )
I'll ask Why???
The Honda P 500 has a bench seat you & a passenger can ride All Day Comfortably & include gear for 2 .( take you any place a ATV can )
The Price on 450 & 500 ATV's and the P500 are NOT that far apart. ( Base Model to Base Model ---- Not the New P 520 ).
Honda has LOWERED the PRICE for the 2021 P 500 a few hundred since the --- New 2021 Model P 520 has been announced.

When Honda dealers get some of the New P 520' S on the sales floor to sell there will be some good used P 500's on the marketl later this year.
Depending on the wallet:
The P500 has alot of advantages over the ATV.
That New P520 has even more advantages over the ATV.

I have an old 2004 350 Rancher.
At some point since then Honda made the seat shorter and it looks uncomfortably short for 2 up.
But to be honest, riding back from the feild I usally sit sideways on the rear rack, too damn tired to swing a leg over the machine to ride 2 up on the seat.
We don't trail ride 2 up on the ATVs.

Youth explains every thing.
A friend of mine bought his son a RZR 800 when they 1st. came out. he put 300 miles on it decided didn`t like it.Wanted a dirt bike.
I owned it for a while the concept is nice got tired of high maintenance .
My last rancher was a 2012 with EPS real nice machine traded in Dec. 2013 for Pioneer P700 - 4.

Wifes 2016 420 Rancher fa6 ( DCT, IRS, PS) has been flawless. Excellent engine braking, very safe on hills.

We have 2 rancher 420’s both are set up with the passenger seat, when the kids are up they ride 2 up all the time. You gain some nice storage but lose the use of the rear rack, but with the P700 we don’t really use the ranchers except for riding.F76A4924 5211 4180 80AF 85756D3E6448FCCC1B18 FF1D 42DE 9A6D 013900D3C60C

My quad sees both work and play with one or two on board, just like my P5. Just depends what and where.

I concur with the comments above, either a Rancher or Foreman are hard to beat. I have owned both and if just trail riding/having fun even with an extra person on occasion, I would go with the Rancher. IMO, the Rancher is nimble and works well in tight riding places. Personally, I liked the Foreman better, but felt it was proportionally more a working ATV vs play, IMO....

I have a 07 2wd rancher and it hits 55-56 mph I also have a 2019 rancher with dct, irs, eps and it is limited to about 47 mph

what about the makes that build actual 2up machines.. I know those rack seats are not legal in my state anymore
