Is this how a warranty claim works?

took my 21 p1-3 that is 1 month old into the dealer yesterday for a cv boor that split. His 1st question to me was if i bought it there, my response was why? Does the Honda warranty not apply if i didnt buy my sxs here? He said no he just wanted to make sure i was in his system. I let it slide because i was in their system from previous dirk bike purchases and parts and whatnot. Anyways he looks at my ride and says it looks like your cv boot has split, took a pic of it and my vin, then we go back to the computer and he says he has to submit a claim to Honda. The decision to repair it under warranty lies only with them, and he would get back to me in a few days if its a covered repair. Is this really how Honda warranty claims work? It seems a bit inconvienent to me as the customer to have to make at least three trips to the dealer to have warranty work completed.

Ya unfortunately that’s not a warranty item. If you have huge pull with them and they are a Honda powerhouse dealership it could get done but I doubt it.

When it comes to warranty, we usually know what they'll pay for and what they won't.

Most times, torn CV boots arent covered because of outside damage. But ive seem a few come apart from the inside and rip the boot.

When a unit is dropped off with a potential warranty issue, we will call either our district service representative or Techline if its not apparent that its covered. Sometimes theyll want pictures or video (for noises). Then if they say its warrantied we will fix it. They may call the part back after to see the issue and if its not a warranty problem the dealer will have to return the money received for the claim.

If the issue is no doubt a warranty problem, we order parts, repair the machine and submit a claim. Most often in this case they wont even ask for parts return unless its a new problem they havent seen before.

Unless we recognize the customer, we always asked if youve been here before or if the unit was purchased here. It just helps streamline our procees for starting an R.O. We dont put any more or less effort into getting your unit repaired if you got it from us or not.

Warranty pays more, we get a parts allowance plus, labor. So warranty work is a better money maker than customer pay.

That's why I took my A arms guards off, they piled debris up around the boots.

I assume you are a mechanic that works at a dealership. Are you a "Honda" dealership as in when someone brings you a RZR you get this cringe of Why?!?

I can relate as I am a GM mechanic and get a cringe when people bring their Fords and Dodges or better yet.... Imports

We dont work on any other brands unless you purchased the unit from us. And only then will we do tires and maybe brakes. In the slow months we may work on some weird stuff, but its rare.

I get your statement as you must have plenty of work fixing GM products. You would rarely see any Ford’s as they just don’t beak down at the same rate as Chevy’s

That would be nice to do. It amazes me how people don't understand there are specialists for a reason. Talk to a Ford mechanic and he could tell you all the common problems that a Ford has. That's the reason he is a specialist.

If the boot rips, it’s usually from hitting something on the trail.

man this saga is still on going, took my machine there a week ago and still havent heard back, i emaled them this morning and asked for an update but havent heard back yet, ill email again tomorrow i guess, then when i dont hear back ill stop by on Saturday, they are the worst at not returning calls and not very good at replying back to emails.

When mine was new (2016) with only a few hundred miles I took it to the dealer for a tire issue. When I went to pick it up I was advised that I had a boot leaking (left rear). They told me that the boots were not warranted. I examined the boot and it was obvious that it was leaking at the factory mold seam in the boot. There was no sign that any physical damage had been done. Obviously a factory defect that they would not warranty.

Find a new dealer, my Marquette dealer sucked! So I went to Hodag Honda in Wisconsin 90 minute drive but well worth the
extra miles
