A lot of the mapping apps it seems people commonly use (Gaia, AllTrails, OnxOffroad, etc) are now coming with carplay/android auto integration. I was curious if anyone's tried these in their carplay format, how well it works, and how you mounted the carplay screen? To have a simplified interface for music and mapping, as well as camera hookups, seems nice.

I typically run my work provided ipad for this, but I am potentially changing careers, and I'd rather not buy a tablet, if I can just route it through my phone using carplay instead. That and my jobs that much harder when I forget to take it out of the machine. Thanks in advance!

All these carplay systems are is an overlay (program) on your regular tablet OS to give you some bigger buttons and a few nanny restrictions, so I'm not exactly sure what features you're looking for.

A regular tablet (samsung 7", for example) will do everything you want. You can add the car app if you want, but it's unnecessary.

I recommend the Samsung 7" because they have good GPS for offline use.

No real benefit to running these under

The CarPlay screen? You mean ... the tablet? LOL.

AA/CarPlay doesn't really add any functionality - only overhead.

Like @Hondasxs, I've been running the AGAMA launcher for several years now. It accomplishes the same thing you likely want to do (put a standard control head around various apps), but all the apps are simply running in native mode (Android or IoS) instead of having to be optimized for AA/CarPlay.

Here's a video that covers a bunch of the AGAMA app:
