I installed a battery and battery isolator and took the winch off the primary battery, got Whips coming, Have a fused box coming also, do I need a relay, don't think I do, the whips are Millar and come with converter and leads, needs toggle switch. Are relays only needed if your accessory doesn't come with it, told you I needed a lesson or two, HA

if the item you are switching draws more current that the switch is rated for then you need a relay.

So I really don't understand what a relay does, let me give it a try, power up the relay from a fused source, come out of it to the accessory , toggle switch connects to relay and controls power to accessories? So any accessories that don't come with one you will need one?

Acc that draw more amps than your switch can handle need a relay. A relay can handle more amps than your switch. Power from a batt of fuse box goes to your switch. From your switch it goes to one side of your relay and the other side of the relay goes to your acc.

The hot lead goes from power to switch to relay that way it closes the circuit

The fuse box is rated from 5 amps to 30 amps, that probably will cover most installs??????

Uh no your idea of a relay is not correct.

A relay, allows you to use a low amp draw source to power several switches etc. From one source such as the black/white 15 amp accsy. wire. These switches when turned on should go to a high amp relay that has a direct power source from your secondary battery, the switch from the low amp power source when turned on energizes the relay to close providing power directly from battery with the amp draw allowed by size of relay from 20 amp small light bars up to 400 amp heavy duty winch relays.

Typically a power distribution module is the ticket. Much info here, including explanation of wiring the 8 post rocker switches correctly.

Start here and about the next 20 posts answering wiring questions.
