I wrestled with this challenge and decided to go with a 49" box. I'll put pack and stuff on the bottom and guns in a soft case on top but still in the box. It's 49" wide. Where we hunt they must be cased for transport anyway.

I have lever action rifles they are a little shorter than most rifles but I bought a scabbard and use that its a little old fashioned but it seems to work well for me

It's really hard to beat the Cabela's UTV double gun case that goes on the back of the roll cage. Easy access and they stay clean.

Mini 14 gets to ride in the front muzzle down..... M70 .270 hard (lined) black plastic case should fit in the rear tub tray, I hope...
