My 'Maintenance Minder Indicator' (one of the various screens available in the display above the steering wheel) is counting down from 100 miles, at which time I'll perform the 100 mile maintenance servicer per the owner's manual. Between now and then, I'll just drive it in a reasonably civil manner - no top speed runs, no hauling or pulling very heavy loads, and I will vary my speed and RPMs (not remain constant for a long period of time) and otherwise drive it exactly like I WON'T drive it once the 100 mile service is done.

Warm it up let it cool, do three cycles of quarter throttle to idle, three cycles half throttle to idle, three cycles three quarter throttle to idle, three cycles full throttle to idle.
Then ride it like you stole it.

I got this recipe off a street bike web site years ago and it never left me down with a oil burner yet, the theory behind it is when you load the engine it increase the pressure of the rings to cylinder wall to wear on the fresh hone marks, the deacceleration creates a vacuum in the cylinder to pull the microscopic particles off the cylinder wall that the rings machined off during the break in period.

🤔.......didn't know there was a "break in" period 🤷‍♂️

Took it right outta the dealer into a mud park and been dogging it ever since. 2K miles no issues 🤞

I was very gentle for the first 40 miles, then got impatient. I spent a few hours on a 35 mph road through a city, going from one end to the other. People were staring. Got it to 100 in a hurry.

I had the Talon bouncing off the speed limiter (74mph) w Lil'906UP riding shotgun with about 4 miles on the odometer.....is that not the right way to do it?

The totally serious thing I will say, is that my 1000 absolutely hates non ethanol premium gas.
I thought I locked up the engine this summer, first tank of non ethanol on a 104 degree ride. Rattled and knocked like I threw a rod bearing. Only variable was the gas.
Siphoned it out, replaced with premium pump gas and she was happy again.

The totally serious thing I will say, is that my 1000 absolutely hates non ethanol premium gas.
I thought I locked up the engine this summer, first tank of non ethanol on a 104 degree ride. Rattled and knocked like I threw a rod bearing. Only variable was the gas.
Siphoned it out, replaced with premium pump gas and she was happy again.
That’s odd…I just run straight 87 no ethanol gas and never an issue.

I wouldn’t think premium would have an impact either way.

I've always ran 90 octane no ethanol with o problems. It's readily available in my area.

Strange, I've been running the cheap stuff since July of 16, never had any issues, but I run it periodically all week?

I could see having things checked and doing any required maintenance once it hits 1,000 miles...but 100? Is Honda not confidant of their machines???
Even if honda didnt say 100 miles id still want to know what was happening early in the units life. even with other used machines i often change oil when i get it then change again shortly after to look for debris coming from the engine/trans/diffs. Its a piece of mind thing and gives me a baseline for what to expect in the future services on the machine.
