Well insurance totaled my
Truck so I'm looking for new ones. Looking around 11-12 ecoboost f-150 or the 5.0 f-150. Do any of y'all have any experience with with these year model trucks?

5.0 is solid those year modes we have a fleet of them at work that are getting retired after 200k.

We are going with EcoBoost in the new vehicles, apparently they did a study and the EcoBoost has lower maintence cost across the fleet than NA 4&6 and better fuel mileage than the V8 hybrids along with lower upfront cost on the hybrids.

Large fleet nationwide (10,000 plus)so I'm sure there were some all out failures and some perfect machines.

I am apparently about to have a choice to get a EBoost company vehicle.

I've heard a lot of good things about the 5.0. But that year model ecoboost I hear is hit or miss.

Wouldn't know about that year model, bought wife a 15 Explorer Sport with the EB. 16City/18Interstate put a SCT Tuner in with custom tunes and got @70moreHP&TQ 87perf same mileage. With 87eco tune response is less but performance is close to 87 Performance tune with better mileage 18city/20-23 interstate depends if cruise is set to 80 or 70. Pulls the Pioneer better than my Chevy crew, interstate crosswind is less stable because of shorter wheelbase though.

93perf unleashes the EcoBeast @450/450 with custom tune. It doesn't stop pulling, it's bonkers for a 5000lb SUV. Only used it once to see what it'd do, 93 is relatively expensive vs 87, but if you're good spending a $1/gal more. It's FUN.

It's as heavy as the F-150 just doesn't have the beefy drivetrain so tune is limited in Explorer. I think you can get QUITE a bit more out of EB in F-150. Ask @joeymt33 what he gets mileage wise he's told me but I can't remember the specifics.

I had a 2012 Eco boost and I loved it - The only issue I had was a little $5 door in the duct system that switched between Heat and AC broke and therefore once it turned cold I was surprised that I could not get the heat to work... $5 or really $25 but $700 in labor to change out as they ahd to remove both front seats and the whole dash to get to the part.
Imagine their surprise when I picked it up and informed them that is appeared they only changed one side - they had to go back in and change out the passenger side.. I had 60K on the truck when I traded it for a 2015 model F150. I got 15 mpg around town and 20 on the Hwy. I never towed anything with that truck so I can say there.
With the 2015 I get 17 mpg around town and 22-23 on the Hwy - 14-15 mpg when towing ( the 2015 also ahs the smaller of the Eco boost)

I have a 2012 with the 5.0 v8 . Bought it used a little more than a year ago. So far I am pleased with it's performance. I'm getting 18 - 19 mpg . If you plan on towing anything more than a small trailer...educate yourself. These trucks are all about load capacity and they are all over the map depending upon model. Good Luck with your purchase..

I have also heard that the early eco-boost motors could have problems. However my brother has a 2011 model with over 100,000 miles in all it's ever had was the spark plug change. If I was looking in 2011 and 2012 I would also consider the 5.0 as it is one hell of a motor it's just not near as torquey as the eco-boost.

My truck is a crew cab 4x4 slightly lifted on 34" 10 ply tires. It will hit 60 in 5.9 sec and that is at ~6700 lbs last time I scaled it. if I run 60-62 with the cruise set it will get 21-23 mpg. When I set cruise at 78 on the interstate it will get ~17.5. When towing, the fuel mileage isn't any better then a V-8. If the turbos are spooled up and building boost, your mileage is not going to be that great. But if you use cruise control when not towing and and keep the boost low, it will get great mileage. I've got over 100,000 miles and I did have an exhaust manifold leak that was replaced under warranty. Other than that it's been a fantastic truck and my next purchase will be another one.

This is the work trailer I pull around the southeast. I get 9 miles to the gallon pulling this trailer but as you can see it's about 10 feet tall and it's 8 1/2 feet wide.

I've added the heavy springs to the rear and with the LT tires at 80psi it handles loads good. Not as good as my previous F250 but better than any half ton I've ever owned. With the stock springs, it was pretty soft and would sag under a heavy load and sway quite a bit on the highway. Just a $200 spring upgrade made a huge difference.

Oh and you sold me on the second pic with the tractor because that's my whole reason in buying one.

Mine is a 2014 model. Find one that has the 502A package. That's dual leather captain chairs upfront with 10-way power and memory. Then the seats are heated and air-conditioning which is bad ass in the summertime. The sound system is pretty good with Sony speakers and a factory sub under the rear seat.

CP: I've been saying that since that jack wagon was picking Legos from his turds:)

Here's my previous F150 without the heavy duty springs in the rear. You can see how bad it sags on stock springs. That was also before I got the big trailer. But this is the same tractor so this is a good comparison.

By the way, I've been running a tuner with a custom tune since the 3000 mile mark. A lot of the time I'm running the street tune which makes over 500 foot pounds of torque! Most of the time I keep the towing tune in which is a little less aggressive and makes around 470 foot pounds of torque. I'm just saying this to let you know that I have abused this truck with the tuner and oversized tires and tow heavy loads and it has not given me much trouble. I will say that if you choose to use a tuner, you'll need to get some aftermarket gauges because if you push it too far things will get hot and the dummy gauges on the dash won't tell you until it's very hot.

joeymt33 ... Any idea as to the tongue weight when you're towing that tractor.? Anything over 500 lbs requires a weight-distributing hitch. A properly set up WD hitch will put more of your load on the front wheels and help to level your truck.

I don't pull the tractor very far so I never really worried about it when I had that small trailer. I just drive the tractor up on the trailer until I see the truck start to dip down a couple inches and call it good. The picture of the white truck hauling the tractor was when I was using a smaller trailer and had no choice but to pull it up pretty far and even then I didn't pull it to the next county or anything. Now that I've got the 20' trailer, I can adjust the tongue weight.

Now when I'm hauling the work trailer I do pay attention to the tongue weight and even though I don't have a scale I have a good idea for what feels right or wrong when loaded and our work equipment is pretty much always the same so I have places in the floor marked where the equipment goes. I agree that those weight distributing hitches are pretty nice but so far I haven't needed one on a regular basis. There have been times when I hauled stuff I shouldn't have and wished that I had a weight distributing hitch!

I had a 2011 for 2 years before my Ram 2500. Pulled my 28' camper easily, but did stop it quite so well and squatted quite a bit. I never had a problem 1, but only had 37,000 miles on it when I sold it. I put 26,000 on it and never needed service. I loved it and loved hearing it spool up. I would buy again if I get back to a 1/2 ton. Well, maybe, I might just get a Ram with Ecodiesel!!
