P500 Crank, no start, display stays lit

Hi Guys, Well the wife took the 520 up the mountain to feed the eagles, -4 here but Probably -10 where she turned. She stopped at the house shifted to reverse and it stalled. She said it took a lot of cranking but finally started up the mountain ( thank god ) Now it will crank fine but no start, disply stays lit even with key in pocket? I disconnected ignition switch but lights stayed on, so not switch? I can't hear the fuel pump prime, should you be able to hear it? finally can I swap out the pump relay with the lights relay to test it? oh yah, 600 miles on her. Any other ideas are welcome. TIA and sorry for the long post

I would disconnect the battery, then charge the battery fully. While it is charging check for wires that could have insulation cut and contacting metal, especially around areas that you have added devices or modified. If nothing is found but the battery back in and see if the condition still exists. Not sure if this helps, but it is all I can think of.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow. do you know if the relays are interchangeable?
Yes they are. My fuel pump went out. We first exchanged the relays to test if it was a bad relay… at the suggestion of @906UP. I would test your fuel pump fuse as well.. mine was blown.

I can't hear the fuel pump prime, should you be able to hear it? finally can I swap out the pump relay with the lights relay to test it?
Yes, you should hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key.

I'm pretty sure there are a couple of threads on this problem (display staying on). Try using the search to find them. If I remember correctly replacing the ignition switch was the cure.

Thanks for the reply, that is what I hoped but a honda tech said if it was the switch, disconnecting would make the display go out. It didn't.

My guess would be the main relay sticking causing the display to stay on. I would suggest getting the service manual for proper troubleshooting. You can download one from the site if you're a lifetime or contributing member. FYI, the P500 manual will work also, they're the same mechanically/electrically.

This is from a poor memory but I also think it had something to do with water getting into the display.

My guess would be a battery issue. Keeping it on a tender would be recommended, especially in those temps.
He's in Canada so I'm guessing those temps are Celsius, that'd be in the 20°-25° range in Freedom units, still cold but not that cold

LOL, we are in the Cape Breton Highlands and -25c is not unusual. On to the good news, The bug lives again. I seen on another site to unhook Battery for a few minutes, finally tried that and you guessed it, fired up and purrs like a kitten. Any guess's why this worked? Thanks for all the relies!

The firmware sometimes gets a bug causing a error. By disconnecting it clears the memory reboots the system. Or maybe a mysterious drone was flying over your area at that moment in time.😆😅🙃
