P1000 Can't reset my Maintenance Reminder

Never have been able to reset the maintenance reminder, push the Sel/Set button with key off, turn key on and mine flashes three times, owners manual and service manual says flashes two times and then supposedly resets, no just alternates between 1 and two above and below the wrench? I have tried doing this in different modes same results??????? Black tape?

Make sure it is set to the odometer display before you turn it off. Hold the Sel/Set button as you turn the key to on (don't start it). It'll flash a couple times then go away.

The odometer thing is the secret . My older Si Civic is the same way and I fought that s*** for 2-3 oil changes before I figured out it had to be on the odo before doing the key on/hold button.
