Bolt your gun safe down

A Deputy sheriff which is close friend ask me to give him a ride out to local riding area this gun safe was stolen few days ago. They carried it right out front door, looks like all but 5 min with cutoff wheel to get it open then they dumped it. Owner claims 10g worth of guns. I'm just as guilty my crap is getting bolted down tomorrow.

What do you think that one weighed ? 400-500 lbs ? Mine is about 1000 lbs. empty probly 1600 now. It would take a few good men to pack it out.

Sadly all of my guns were lost in a tragic boating accident. I did throw a bag of cement and some lengths of 1/2" pipe just for good measure in my decoy safe though.

Concrete bolts and close to the back wall to minimize prying leverage.

It didn't seem all that heavy to me 2 or 3 hundred maybe, I just pushed it will my foot they where coming back to try again for prints

I agree, mine was moved in by myself and two other guys with the help of an appliance dolly. I can’t image moving that damn thing again. I’ve said it a few times, if I move, the safe stays.

From a standing position I laid mine across a 3'x5' heavy duty lawn trailer I have and towed into my 6' double basement doors with a riding mower and stood it up from there with the help of 3 other people. I don't think there's any chance we could have carried it,not without be hospitalized anyway.

I dont think that was a high $ gun safe . But I guess they destroyed his house holes all through the hall ways and busted door frame then just rolled it down his steps breaking all them on the way down.

And FYI.. typically your guns aren’t covered for theft by homeowners. Or they cover up to a $1000 or something goofy like that. They are covered for fire but not theft. So a good “safe” is a good idea. And a decent camera system is cheap!

Thats considered a residential storage container. A good safe can't be carried out. But you're right it should be bolted down anyway.

A simple alarm system for $15 a month would of helped. What’s funny is my insurance decreased by $20 a month when I got mine so really doesn’t even cost you anything But initial purchase. Doubt the were in and out in less then 35sec.

Contracting for years and years I had the regular occurrence of a homeowner who gave me a key to the house leave for work in the morning and out of habit set their alarm. Here I come later with a key letting myself in only to have the alarm go off. Most of them had automatic resets at 10-15 minutes. I never had police show up before that occurred and was only asked to produce a contract and ID twice. They told me that alarms aren’t the first line of defense, but reinforcing windows and door jambs that make it too hard and noisy to get in to begin with. They want swift quiet entry and will move on to the next house if they can’t get it...FWIW.

For those of you on hard slabs or wood floors, a thief would just use concrete stakes and role the safe out the door, or golf balls. all you have to do it rock it up a little to get them under it then role it away.
Having Family that is in law enforcement, they've seen these tactics used a few times.
If i had guns, they would be in a hidden room behind a false wall. with their own water supply line for fire.

Yeah the siren would scare off most though, unless they aren’t doing anything illegal. The first month I had mine my dog set mine off, alarm company called and sent the police. All was good and when I got home didn’t see anything out of place. I’ve set it off a few times accidentally and it is loud and annoying. It’s just another layer to add that is inexpensive.

I think the best first line is a big dog with a mean bark, my dog is a lab/Dane mix and she freaks people out.
