Hey Pioneer lovers,
After many reviews, researching designs attempting to be as cost efficient as possible, I finally was able to pull the trigger on a “home made” and extremely functional bed extender.
Here are the details:
2007 F150 step side, tail gate bed extender. Tore this completely apart, cut it down and made it work. Original size was 53” wide which I knew was to big. Took the expanding pipes out and started measuring & figured that 15” cutout from the center would be enough to make it sit properly. Started Slicing and refitting everything. Narrowed it down to 38” so there is room to fit the expansion pipes. It fits perfect and I literally have the full bed depth with this when the back seats are up. Traced on a cardboard template the new depth and will cut from 3/8 black abs plastic sheet. Cutting new mounts at work on sheet laser and will post updates. This is super light but very strong. With a little engineering and a few hours of time it saved me about $400 as compared to new. Any questions ask. Thanks

Looks great! Can you show a picture of how it’s attached on the sides?

Thanks! That’s is still pending, as once I get base mounted to the frame and everything aligned I can determine the attachment solution. Thinking just turn buckle to the bed tie downs honestly. Once I get it dialed in, I’ll definitely share.

So with months that have gone by, work, kids, Volunteer fire service stuff and tons of rides, finally put another check off to the homemade extender. It finally hold it self up and weight. Throwing final hardware on tomorrow and paint. Literally have $45 and can best the crap out of it and won’t hurt my feelings vs 400+ for new and cannot take a beating.

Man, I have one of those from a ford pick up. I have been saving it for awhile now. Wanting to do the same as you did. I like that setup. You just cut down one or bent your own tubing? Looks good.

Actually this is actually from a. Ford F-150 that I scored as well.
The center bars I cut down and then the bend tubes as well about 2” to ensure I was able to get it small enough. I needed 42” in width so that was the number I went for. I took 1-1/4 conduit pipe clamps and rubber matting that was cut down to secure it to the weather treat CCX 3/4” plywood (share photos today) and then used turn buckles to draw it tight. Went through the main frame with SS eye bolts to firmly secure it. If you want more photos or measurements hit me up. I put a full size yeti cooler and couple dry bags in it with room to spare. Now looking for a cargo net to add to top.

Final update and completion. Used implemented black high gloss paint to match roll cage gloss but something a little stronger. Then used a menards special truck bed lining paint. 4 coats on the wood. Little texture to help from gear and cooler from sliding. Used stainless steel turnbuckle and hardware to join it all together. Have $65 in it total. Very happy with it.
