Battery isolator

Just wondering why every one uses a battery isolator with their dual battery set ups? Just picked up an oddest 925 and in wondering if the difference in size and type between the stock one and this one will shorten their life. Or is the isolator only to keep the starting battery for only starting? Eliminating the chance of every ones accessories From leaving it dead?
