5+5 Offset Wheels

So after owning my Talon for a couple years, I've worn the tires down to nubs. I love the razor sharp precision of the steering and handling, and I know I'm about to lose a lot of it by throwing bigger tires on, but here I am. I'm tired of dragging the bottom during the times we go riding creeks. After weeks of off and on looking for wheels, I've decided I'm too old and too stupid to grasp how they classify offsets. I understand the concept, and when I see it in MM, I can make sense of that, but when I see 5+5, I am lost. Best I can figure is that 5+5 is a neutral offset? If that is true, could I throw a set of 5+5 wheels on an X4 with spacers and get close to the stock widths? I'm of course trying to use the same size wheel and tire all the way around. I know this topic has been beaten to death a thousand times, and I'm sorry if it annoys anyone reading. I just don't trust myself to make the call one way or the other after reading through no less than every post on this forum and a lot of other websites. It's like information overload.

I found this wheel early in my searches and I fell in love with it. The colors, I think, will match nicely with the all black/gray decal talon I own.

Thanks for this. I think I probably should have added that it's kind of like my cellphone. I don't care how it works, I just like that it works, and I'm okay with being blissfully ignorant the rest of my life as it continues to work. I'm okay with not fully grasping the concepts of offset vs. backspacing. Like most guys, I know that it matters and I know it needs to be correct for whatever vehicle I'm putting it on.

Offsets - 1. I 'know' what it means but turning that into usable information has escaped me because - 2. 6+1, 4+3 etc. vary wildly between the various wheel manufacturers. To make an engineeringly accurate decision you need to know the MM numbers of each wheel - that's too involved for my simple mind, I just wanna ride.

For that reason, I bought STI HD9 wheels because they were marketed to be as close as possible to the stock Talon offsets. That was back in early 2020, before the Talon caught on, so information was scarce.

Short version - the Talon uses 6+1 on the front and 4+3 on the rear, and I have no idea what that translates into MM. 😢 You want to stay close to 6+1 in the front or you'll effect your scrub radius which 'might' affect your steering.

All that to say - If you want to stay with the stock wheel offsets - 6+1 on the front, 4+3 on the rear. If you want all wheels the same so you can rotate and carry a spare, 6+1 all the way around with 1-1/2" spacers on the rear. I don't like spacers, and if being 'squared up' isn't important to you, you can run without them, the rear will be 3" narrower and it's almost unnoticeable, both visually and handling wise. Some racers like the rear narrower, it's said to 'turn in' better.

Anything above a +38 will be fine. A +38 is typically considered a 5+2 (7” wide rim) by manufacturers. I have seen a 5+2 be a +10 which is too much offset for my liking. +45 or so is usually considered a 6+1. That’s why it’s better to know the mm. If you like the quick turning and feel of Talon stock, then I would suggest staying in those 2 ranges. Also the more offset you go with the harder it is on wheel bearings and you will push (scrub) in the corners. We run a +45 on 2 of our Talon R and a +38 on the other one. The proper offset is a math equation. So if you have a +45 on 28 inch tires you essentially would have the same calculation as a +38 on 32 inch tires (not exact but you get the point). Personally, I would keep the same wheel on all four corners and do a 1.5” spacer on the rear. We have thrashed our Talons with no issues with the spacers. Yes, a more narrow rear end does help with turn in but on mountain trails it also makes it a little less stable when off camber. Just my .02.

Running System3 SB4 15x7 - 4/137 - (+45) all the way around (with 1.5" spacers on the rear) on my '23 Talon 1000R2 FLV. Wrapped with AMS M1 Evil 32x10-15. If I math correctly, the wheels are actually closer to ~5.8+1.2 than 6+1.

Zero issues relative to clearance. Just recently picked up one more to carry as a spare.
